The Smithsonian is honoring Abraham Lincoln's bicentennial with special exhibitions and programs, and educators will be able to participate in the national celebration through the first Smithsonian Online Education Conference: Abraham Lincoln. Participants will explore Smithsonian research and collections related to Lincoln's life—everything from portraits and diaries to documents and historical artifacts. Alongside Smithsonian curators, participants will look at Lincoln's life and legacy from the perspectives of history, science, and art.

This workshop examines the questions "How did the self-contained environment of a plantation—its layout, buildings, isolation, and use of the land—influence the lives and self-image of the enslaved?," "What made a plantation 'home?'," "What made a plantation 'hell?'," "How did a slave reconcile 'home' and 'hell?,'" and "What can plantation photographs tell us about plantation life?"

The African Studies Association (ASA) will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its first annual meeting in historic Chicago, IL. As part of the larger program, the event will feature scholars, artists, and community activists from the Chicago area who will facilitate panels, workshops, and discussions tailored especially to educators.
The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and Howard University in Washington will co-produce a conference on Emancipation and Race in the Age of Lincoln. The conference will focus on the international dimension of emancipation and will compare different nations' approaches to the issue of emancipation. The conference coincides with the District of Columbia's Emancipation Day and will feature public evening events.
This two-day workshop will explore how beliefs about race have shaped—and challenged—American's identity as a land of "freedom and opportunity." It will look at significant events and movements in American history—slavery, immigration, the eugenics movement, the Civil Rights Movement—and will consider legacies of each in American society today. Ultimately, this journey will bring participants back to the present. Examining American history through the lens of race and membership empowers teachers and their students to value how their choices shape contemporary America. Participants will receive a resource book and membership in the Facing History and Ourselves Teacher Network.
