Fort Foster was one of the original Seminole War forts constructed in Florida during the early 1800s. Today a replica wood-picket-style fort has been constructed on the original site. Park rangers provide tours, and explain the Fort operations and living conditions, as well as telling the history of the Seminole Wars in Florida. The interpretive center contains exhibits about the fort, the Seminoles, and the Second Seminole War.

With three permanent collections and a membership in the Smithsonian Affiliations Program, the Museum offers a wide range of exhibits, including a glimpse into the daily lives of soldiers during the Civil War; a reproduction of a turn-of-the-century locomotive factory; and an exciting depiction of the Civil War's Great Locomotive Chase.

Visitors to Oak Alley Plantation may tour the restored 1830s plantation home and its grounds. Tours of the mansion are conducted by guides dressed in period costumes and are given on the hour, generally lasting 35 to 40 minutes.

During the 1790s, James Vann became a Cherokee Indian leader and wealthy businessman. He established the largest and most prosperous plantation in the Cherokee Nation, covering 1,000 acres of what is now Murray County. In 1804 he completed construction of a 2-and-a-half-story brick home that was the most elegant in the Cherokee Nation. After Vann was murdered in 1809, his son Joseph inherited the mansion and plantation. Joseph was also a Cherokee leader and became even more wealthy than his father. In the 1830s almost the entire Cherokee Nation was forced west by state and federal troops on the infamous Trail of Tears. The Vann family lost their elegant home, rebuilding in the Cherokee Territory of Oklahoma. Today the Vann House survives as Georgia's best-preserved historic Cherokee Indian home. A guided tour allows visitors to see the house which features hand carvings, a "floating" staircase, a 12-foot mantle, and fine antiques.

Since 1966, the Society has preserved historical records, collected writings and artifacts of life in Louisa County, and presented these collections to the public through exhibits, magazines and lectures. It operates The Sargeant Museum of Louisa County History at 214 Fredericksburg Avenue in Louisa, which has permanent exhibits featuring Native Peoples, Revolutionary War, Civil War, Transportation, Education and Government. Temporary exhibits delve more deeply into particular periods and themes of interest. In addition, the museum staff sponsor monthly programs for the public and offer genealogical assistance. Programs are available for 4th and 5th grade history classes in The Westward Movement, Reconstruction, and Civil Rights. Others upon request. The Society operates Teackle Mansion, a Federal-era, Neoclassical style house built between 1802 and 1819 by Littleton Dennis Teackle in Princess Anne, Maryland.

Old Salem includes four museums—the Historic Town of Salem, the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA), the Old Salem Children's Museum, and the Old Salem Toy Museum— which engage visitors in an educational historical experience about those who lived and worked in the early South.

At the Museum, visitors can discover the past through a wide variety of permanent and changing exhibits, educational programs, and special events. They can step into the turn of the 20th century with a tour of the 1895 Hawkins House; enjoy hands-on fun in the Attic, a"please touch" exhibit that is a favorite with families; and explore a downtown of yesteryear on First Street, an exhibit that brings to life three early Rogers businesses.

The Society's mission is to promote interest in and enjoyment of the history of Montgomery County, Tennessee; to ascertain, preserve and promote local history; to identify historic sites and structures and promote their preservation; and to hold periodic meetings of a stimulating nature in keeping with the interests of the society. The Society also operates a museum in the L&N Train Station, which houses exhibits.

At the Museum, visitors can experience hands-on history displays on naval aviation and see more than 150 restored aircraft representing Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard aviation. They can feel the sensations of flight in a flight simulator or visit the Naval Aviation Memorial Theater and view an IMAX film.
