Frisco Native American Museum [NC]

Description

The Frisco Native American Museum is located on Hatteras Island in the North Carolina Outer Banks and was first opened in 1987. The museum is the brainchild of Carl and Joyce Bornfriend, who still operate the museum year round. In addition to the exhibits and special programs in the structure, the museum offers several miles of nature trails.

Zwaanendael Museum [DE]

Description

The Zwaanendael Museum works to preserve and present military, social, and maritime history in the Lewes area of Delaware. From the museum website: "Modeled after the town hall in Hoorn, the Netherlands, the museum commemorates the founding of Delaware's first European settlement by the Dutch in 1631."

Historical Society of Frederick County [MD]

Description

The Historical Society of Frederick County is dedicated to preserving and raising awareness of the history of Frederick County, Maryland. The society owns and operates a local history museum as well as a historic house museum, the Taney House. The museum boasts an impressive collection of decorative and fine arts, including a unique collection of tower clocks.

Morgan's Plantation Log Kitchen [WV]

Description

John Morgan of Putnam Company originally built the Morgan’s Plantation Log Kitchen in 1846. The building served both armies during the Civil War as both a hospital and kitchen. The building was moved from its original location to its current location in 1972 when the John Amos Power Plant was built on its original location. Today, the building serves a historic museum, and is furnished with period kitchen artifacts and utensils.

Description

The Northwood Hills Neighborhood Association is dedicated to maintaining the history of the Northwood Hills Neighborhood as well as functioning as a typical neighborhood association. In particular, the association works with other local groups in order to preserve important historic structures.

Miami Design Preservation League [FL]

Description

The Miami Design Preservation League seeks to preserve and share the history of Miami's architecture, both within and outside of the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District. Miami is perhaps most widely known for its Art Deco architecture. However, the historic district includes Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival, and Miami Modern (MiMo) structures.

The league offers a film series, lectures, a gallery with exhibits related to the Art Deco movement, guided walking tours, iPod or cellphone self-guided walking tours, and guided bicycle or Segway tours.

Westville [GA]

Description

Westville is a living history museum which emulates an 1850s west Georgia village. Numbering over 30 total, the restored antebellum structures include businesses, residences, a church, a schoolhouse, and a courtyard.

Westville offers costumed interpreters and group tours. Reservations are required for group tours.
