Columbia CA Chamber of Commerce [CA]

Description

The Columbia CA Chamber of Commerce is dedicated towards preserving and aiding in the everyday operation of the Columbia State Historic Park, which is located in Columbia, California. Columbia was one of the first gold rush towns in California, and was founded in 1850 along a particularly large vein of gold, and so was very successful. Unlike many other gold rush towns, Columbia was never truly abandoned, and was incorporated into the California State Park system in 1945.

The site offers a history of Columbia, a listing of merchants and lodging in and around Columbia, and an events calendar.

Wildland Firefighter Museum [NM]

Description

The Wildland Firefighter Museum was first opened in 1999 in Capitan, New Mexico. The museum is most noteworthy for its location next to the State Smokey Bear Historical park, the "birthplace and burial site of the world-renowned Smokey Bear." The museum contains collections of antique firefighting tools and equipment as well as a large collection of Smokey Bear memorabilia. In addition, the museum seeks to educate the public on wildland fire prevention.

Anaconda Main Street Program [MT]

Description

The Anaconda Main Street program was founded in 2008 with a mission to "revitalize the downtown Anaconda business district with an emphasis on conserving, preserving and restoring Anaconda’s historic buildings and resources that reflect the community’s heritage, personality and values." Today, Anaconda is a popular resort destination in Southwest Montana.

The site is actually the Anaconda town website, and so offers information on attractions and services in the town of Anaconda.

"Museums Alaska is the statewide museum association of individuals and institutions committed to preserving the natural and human history of Alaska, improving existing museums, and promoting staff training." Museums Alaska maintains a central office to recieve and distribute information about Alaska's museums and also publishes a quarterly newsletter, "Network," which provides the public with information about highlighted Alaska museums and alerts museum employees with professional employees.

The site offers links to all museums affiliated with the association, an events calendar, online job listings, and a .pdf version of "Network."

Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy [CA]

Description

Established in 1981, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is the nonprofit partner that supports and assists the Golden Gate National Parks in research, interpretation, and conservation programs. The Conservancy's work is undertaken with generous contributions from individual, corporate, and foundation donors, as well as income earned from operating park bookstores and cafes, publishing educational materials, producing interpretive merchandise, and providing park tours. Since its inception in 1981, the Parks Conservancy has provided the Golden Gate National Parks with more than $100 million in support and is recognized as one of the largest and most effective park partners in the country.

The Conservancy is focused on aiding the parks, and so does not offer visitors much besides volunteer opportunities. The website offers detailed visitor and historical information about all parks supported by the Conservancy, and also offers access to park stores and events calendars for each park.

Kenmore Heritage Society [WA]

Description

The Kenmore Heritage Society is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Kenmore, Washington, a Seattle-area town. The historical society was born in 1998, and since has worked tirelessly to collect and preserve historical artifacts, provide a variety of historically-themed events, and publish two historical books.
