Sluice Boxes State Park [MT]

Description

The Sluice Boxes State Park contains a portion of the Montana Central Railroad, remnants of the Barker mines, and historic cabins. Besides railroad workers and miners, the area was also utilized by men who drove mules, known as muleskinners; prospectors; and smeltermen.

The park offers a guided geology hike for students, three miles of trails, and outdoor activities. Wheelchair accessibility is limited. The website offers a lesson plan.

Wickersham State Historic Site [AK]

Description

The Wickersham State Historic Site preserves one of the residences, built in 1898, of James Wickersham (1857-1939). Wickersham served as a judge and Congressional delegate for Alaska; and is widely recognized as a key figure in Alaska's development. The home now presents period furnishings, artifacts, and photographs related to Wickersham and the Gold Rush.

Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site [CO]

Description

The 230-acre Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site is a living history farm depicting Ute and Plains Indian life circa 1775 and life on an 1860s homestead, 1880s home and ranch, and 1907 Edwardian estate. Cows, horses, chickens, and sheep are kept on site.

The site offers exhibits, period rooms, a junior docent program, and concerts. The site is open between June 6th and August 16th.

Kimberly Crest House and Gardens [CA]

Description

Kimberly Crest is an 1897 French chateau style residence. The interior features French Revival settings, and the grounds contain Italian gardens. Residents have included J. Alfred Kimberly, who co-founded the Kimberly-Clark Foundation, a manufacturer of health and hygiene products.

The site offers exhibits, period rooms, guided tours, guided group tours, and guided school tours. The house and gardens are open September through July. Guests are requested to call prior to their visit to ascertain that the site will be open.

Highland Park Heritage Trust [CA]

Description

From the Heritage Trust website, "The Highland Park Heritage Trust is dedicated to the preservation of Los Angeles’ Arroyo Seco communities of Highland Park, Garvanza, Mt. Washington, Hermon and Montecito Heights and Cypress Park."

The trust offers historic home tours and walking tours of the Heritage Trust's neighborhoods. The website offers visitor information and information regarding upcoming events.

Gem County Historical Society and Historical Village Museum [ID]

Description

The Gem County Historical Society of Gem County, ID operates the Historical Village Museum. The museum complex contains a museum of the history of Emmett, ID; the circa 1900 cottage of the fifth governor of Idaho (1901-1903), Frank W. Hunt; the Little Red Schoolhouse; the Bunkhouse; and the Blacksmith Shop. The Hunt cottage contains its original furnishings. The Bunkhouse presents information on indigenous animal species and the local cattle and sheep industries. Topics addressed in the local history museum include Native American life, irrigation, the fruit industry, settlers, trappers, and miners. Collection highlights include a "coyote gun" and a broom maker dating to the 1880s.

Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society and Harbor History Museum [WA]

Description

The Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of the greater Gig Harbor Peninsula, WA. To this end, the society operates the Harbor History Museum.

The society offers exhibits, outreach presentations and activities for students, traveling trunks, traveling exhibits, and research center access.

The museum, including the research center, is closed for relocation. Tours of the new facility are available by appointment.

Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park and Chaw'se Regional Indian Museum [CA]

Description

Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park nestles in a little valley 2,400 feet above sea level with open meadows and large valley oaks that once provided the native Americans of this area with an ample supply of acorns. The park was created in 1968 and preserves a great outcropping of marbleized limestone with some 1,185 mortar holes—the largest collection of bedrock mortars in North America. The Museum has been designed to reflect the architecture of the traditional roundhouse. Exhibited in this two-story museum are outstanding examples of the technology and crafts of the Miwok and other Sierra Nevada native American groups.

The park offers exhibits, tours, educational programs, and occasional recreational and educational events.
