Assay Office [ID]

Description

When gold was found in Idaho in 1860, an Assay Office was set up to test the purity of the mined gold before it could be shipped. By 1870, the office was complete. Today it is a museum for Idaho's mining history.

The office currently cannot accommodate visitors. The Idaho Historic Society does however offer in-class educational programs on mining and other topics. Travelling trunks for grades 3-12 are available for lending. Outreach opportunities on variety of subjects are also available for grades 4-12.Videos, slide shows, and lesson plans are obtainable for educators.

Sandy, Oregon Historical Society and Sandy Area Historical Museum [OR]

Description

The Sandy, Oregon Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Sandy, Boring, and Estacada, Oregon and the Greater Mount Hood area. To this end, the society operates the Sandy Area Historical Museum. Historically, logging led Sandy, Oregon's commercial ventures. Travelers on the Oregon Trail also often stopped at Sandy to recuperate before continuing their long voyage.

Gustine Historical Society [CA]

Description

From the society website: "The Gustine Historical Society seeks to uncover, preserve and disseminate knowledge about the history of Gustine and the "West Side" of California." The society runs a local history museum as well as a history center, which is research focused.

The society offers research resources and self-guided tours of the museum. The website offers a history of Gustine, visitor information, and an extensive photo gallery.

Collier Memorial State Park [OR]

Description

Collier Memorial State Park has an outdoor camping focus but also has one of the finest Logging Museums in the country. The outdoor museum features more than 75 pieces of antique logging and railroad equipment as wells as a Pioneer village.

The outdoor museum offers free, self-guided tours. There are no educational programs designed for school groups. Wagon rides and costumed interpreters may be offered, check before making reservations.

Bannack State Park [MT]

Description

Bannack State Park is the site of Montana's first major gold discovery on July 28, 1862. This strike set off a massive gold rush that swelled Bannack's population to over 3,000 by 1863. As the value of gold steadily dwindled, Bannack's bustling population was slowly snuffed out. There are over 50 buildings that line Main Street with their historic log and frame structures that recall Montana's formative years.

Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park [AZ]

Description

The Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park is located in the Tombstone, the seat of Cochise County. Built in 1882, the structure was designed in the Victorian style and once house the offices of the sheriff, recorder, treasurer, and board of supervisors, as well as the jail and courtrooms of Cochise County. Today, the structure serves as a museum of law enforcement in the wild west.

The courthouse offers guided tours and exhibits on law in the wild west and local history. The website offers visitor information, a calendar of events, and a history of the structure and of Tombstone.

Sherwood Historical Society [OR]

Description

The Sherwood Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history of Sherwood, Oregon, and the surrounding area. The society runs a Heritage Center, which serves as a local history museum.

The society offers re-enactments, guided tours, exhibits, and special events. The website offers visitor information and an events calendar.

Port Orford Lifeboat Station [OR]

Description

The Port Orford Lifeboat Station was constructed in 1934 in order to provide lifesaving service to the southern portion of the Oregon Coast. The station was close in 1970 when the advent of helicoptor search and rescue made the lifeboat station obsolete. Today, the lifeboat station is open to visitors year round, and features a new visitor center.

The station offers exhibits and interpretive activities in the visitor center, along with a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, swimming, fishing, and a small beach. The website offers a history of the station along with visitor information.
