Description

"What perhaps more than anything else distinguished the Revolution and Founding from European experience was the American transformation of the idea of a social contract from theory to practice. By focusing on the role of the social contract this seminar can shed new light on the old question, 'Was the American Revolution a revolution?' The enormous importance of the idea of a social contract in America after the revolutionary era can be tracked by studying, among other developments, the land reform movement or the uses of the Declaration of Independence, down to Martin Luther King's famous 'I Have A Dream' speech of 1963." Will use primary sources to examine the effects of the American Revolution and the U.S. concept of a social contract, including the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, the English Declaration of Rights, the Gettysburg Address, and Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

The Expansion of Expression

Description

This seminar will explore historical issues related to the freedom of speech and expression in the U.S., examining court cases including the 1919 U.S. Supreme Court case Schenck v. United States, the 1989 case Texas v. Johnson, and the 1997 case Reno v. American Civil Liberties Union.

Tallmadge Church [OH]

Description

A Tallmadge committee of seven men developed plans for building this church in 1819 and appointed one of their members, Lemuel Porter, as the architect and builder. The church raising began in July of 1822 and the church was dedicated on 8 September 1825. Reflecting Porter's design, the wood, brace-framed church features a Greek Revival portico, supported by four large columns, and a dominant 100-foot-high steeple with a weathervane.

Fort Amanda [OH]

Description

Originally built in the fall of 1812 by Kentucky troops under the command of Lt. Col. Robert Pogue, the fort was enlarged to almost double the original size during the spring of 1813 by Ohio militia soldiers under the command of Capt. Daniel Hosbrook. A fifth blockhouse was added during the second phase of construction as well as several cabins and storage buildings.

Story Mound [OH]

Description

Story Mound, of interest primarily to archaeologists, consists of a large, rounded earthen mound located on slightly less than an acre of ground. This prehistoric burial mound stands 19.5 feet high, with a basal diameter of 95 feet. Erected by prehistoric Adena Indians (800 BC—AD 100), it was excavated in 1897 by Clarence Loveberry. It yielded the first documented example of a circular Adena timber building, a structural type now known as the norm in Adena ceremonial and domestic architecture.

Miamisburg Mound [OH]

Description

The Miamisburg Mound is the largest conical burial mound in the state of Ohio and possibly in the eastern U. S. Archaeological investigations of the surrounding area suggest that it was constructed by the prehistoric Adena Indians (800 BC–AD 100). Built on a 100-foot-high bluff, the mound measures 877 feet in circumference. It was originally more than 70 feet high. Visitors may climb the 116 steps from its base to the summit for a view of the surrounding park.

Seip Mound [OH]

Description

Seip Mound is the central mound in a group of geometric earthworks. Farming and erosion have degraded the surrounding earthworks leaving the central mound an outstanding feature. It is 240 feet long, 130 feet wide, and 30 feet high. Excavations have revealed that prehistoric Indian buildings existed near the earthworks. Today, visitors can see the location of some of these buildings as they are outlined by short posts in the ground. The Hopewell Indians (100 BC–AD 500) built Seip Mound for burials. This culture had a highly developed craft industry, as is evidenced by artifacts found with bodies in the burial site.

Harrison Tomb [OH]

Description

Harrison's tomb and monument contains the remains of William Henry Harrison, ninth president of the United States. An obelisk of Bedford limestone, with marble entranceway, rises 60 feet above the tomb. Harrison, who was born in Virginia in 1773, spent most of his adult life in Ohio and Indiana. He served as secretary to the territorial governor, senator, representative, and president, but he is most famous as a military hero. Harrison commanded the western army during the War of 1812.
