Castle Air Museum presents history through the display of restored historic aircraft. Visitors can stand under the wing of a Convair RB-36H Peacemaker, a Boeing B-52, or of many other planes.

Point Sur Lighthouse and its supporting lightstation buildings, now a California State Historic Park, stand atop a dramatic volcanic rock just offshore in Big Sur, California. This historic aid-to-navigation has a modern aero-beacon which still guides ships along the treacherous Central California Coast. From 1889 until 1974, families lived and worked in the buildings atop Point Sur.

The Folsom Powerhouse is an example of the tremendous advance in the commercial application of electricity. H.P. Livermore realized that the water of the American River could turn generators for electricity in Sacramento, 22 miles downstream. With his partners, Livermore built the powerhouse, which still looks much as it did in 1895. Vintage generators are still in place at the powerhouse, as is the control switchboard, faced with Tennessee marble. Visitors touring the powerhouse can see the massive General Electric transformers, each capable of conducting from 800 to 11,000 volts of electricity, in addition to the forebays and canal system that brought the water from the dam.

The Museum is housed in the restored 1891 Southern Pacific Depot. The Valley's past is featured in a permanent exhibit that includes artifacts, an historical narrative frieze, and pictures of historic buildings. In addition to this permanent exhibit on Valley history, the Museum sponsors revolving exhibits and several guided tours including the Alamo Cemetery and Old Town Danville.

The primary mission of the Society is to preserve the heritage and to record the history of the San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) for the benefit of the citizens of San Francisco. This mission will include the conservation and preservation of the collection, display of documents, graphic items, fire memorabilia, apparatus, appliances, and other items at the Society's Museum. The award-winning Society muster team, by preserving the physical techniques of firefighting used in the past, makes the Museum a museum of living history.

The 1876 Grand Union Hotel, also called El Hotel Grande, and eventually the Stagecoach Inn, has had a variety of uses during its existence. It has served as post office, tearoom, boys' military school, restaurant, and exclusive gift shop. A cowboy movie starring Hoot Gibson and Sally Eilers was filmed here in the 1930s. Around the Stagecoach Inn are the Tri-Village buildings, made up of replicas of a pioneer home, a Spanish-Mexican adobe, and a Chumash Ap (tule dwelling), representing the three historic eras in the Conejo Valley.

The Society maintains the 1898 Newland House, the oldest residence built in the city of Huntington Beach, as a museum.

The Society seeks to promote and preserve the natural, civil, literal, and ecclesiastical history of the Harbor area in general and the City of Costa Mesa in particular. The Society's museum present exhibits tracing the area's history from prehistory to the present day. The Society also maintains the Diego Sepulveda Adobe (the Estancia), the history of which stretches back to the 1700s. Four distinct periods of California history are represented in the rooms of the Estancia—Indian, Mission, Spanish, and Victorian—and the Society has used these periods as guidelines for furnishing the Adobe.

The Autry National Center celebrates the American West through three important institutions: the Museum of the American West, the Southwest Museum of the American Indian, and the Institute for the Study of the American West. The Autry was established in 2003 following the merger of the Southwest Museum, the Women of the West Museum , and the Museum of the American West (formerly the Autry Museum of Western Heritage). Through innovative exhibitions, a broad range of programs, and an extensive collection of art and artifacts, the Autry National Center explores the distinct stories and interactions of cultures and peoples, and their impact on the complex, evolving history of the American West.

The Sunnyvale Historical Society operates a museum in the restored 1950 Murphy House. The Society's primary mission is to expand the education program offered by the society for third and fourth graders studying local and California history. This program is the only hands-on learning program in the area and is beyond capacity and demand from local schools. The Society's intent is to expand the program to educate 3,000 area students per year.
