Hunterdon County Historical Society

Description

The Hunterdon County Historical Society's library has been in existence since the Society was founded in 1885. In 1963, through the bequest of the late Hiram E. Deats, over 3,000 items were added. These included his personal library and notes on the places and families of Hunterdon County. Today, the library consists of 5,000 printed volumes, manuscripts, newspapers, maps, broadsides, and photographs gathered and preserved since the Society was founded.

The Library is housed in the Doric House, an 1846 Greek Revival structure furnished in authentic Hunterdon antiques of the period.

The House offers tours by appointment and access to the Library.

Wyckoff Garretson House [NJ]

Description

This classic early Dutch home on South Middlebush had been disguised for 276 years when the Meadows Foundation started its research and restoration. It will become the Meadows Foundation’s only house museum, with authentic exterior and interior finishes.

The house offers tours and occasional recreational and educational events.

The Urban Experience

Description

The Gilder Lehrman Summer Seminars are designed to strengthen participants' commitment to high quality history teaching. Public, parochial, independent school teachers, and National Park Service rangers are eligible. These week-long seminars provide intellectual stimulation and a collaborative context for developing practical resources and strategies to take back to the classroom.

Advanced Placement Summer Workshop: United States History

Description

This workshop is designed to prepare high school United States history teachers to teach this course in their high schools, to provide students with the analytical skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with the problems and materials in United States history, and to develop the skills necessary for arriving at conclusions on the basis of an informed judgment and the skills for presenting reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in essay format. The teachers will also be introduced to the latest College Board changes to the test and scoring strategies.

Historic Cold Spring Village [NJ]

Description

"Historic Cold Spring Village is an Early American open-air living history museum." Encompassing 22 acres in Cape May, New Jersey, visitors to the village can take part in a variety of interactive, education, and hands-on family activities. The village maintains a small farm where "heritage crops" are grown, 26 beautifully restored buildings, and a staff of historically-clothed interpreters, who educate and entertain visitors regarding the lifestyles, issues, trades, and crafts of turn of the century New Jersey.

The site offers an events calendar, visitor information, detailed information about the educational programs offered, both in class programs and programs at the village, a section for crafting and recipe ideas, and a listing of recent press releases.

Description

The conference, which is geared towards secondary Social Studies, English and Spanish teachers, offers educators the opportunity to meet and interview former child laborers and trafficking victims, and attend a film festival and lectures by top scholars and human rights activists working in the field. The conference will provide the first forum in the United States for intensive training in the internationally acclaimed, interdisciplinary SCREAM—Supporting Children’s Rights through Education, the Arts and Media— program, developed by the International Labour Organization, International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (ILO/IPEC). SCREAM offers cutting edge pedagogy, ideal for adapting and differentiating instruction to accommodate students' different learning needs and styles.

The highlight of the program will be the forum where former child laborers from South America and victims of trafficking within the US will share their stories. These stories will be videotaped for classroom use and conference participants will develop teaching ideas to accompany these narratives which will be published for use in the schools.
