Pearl Harbor: History, Memory, Memorial

Description

This workshop "will provide the larger historical and cultural context for understanding the Pearl Harbor attacks by illuminating one of most important (if at times antagonistic) bilateral relationships in the 20th century— that between the United States and Japan—and the impact of that relationship on both nations’ international affairs. Importantly, it will explore the multiple histories that converge at Pearl Harbor—including not only American and Japanese but also Hawaiian and diverse American experiences, especially those of Americans of Japanese ancestry—reminding us that despite the mythic status of the Pearl Harbor story in American culture, there are in fact a number of “Pearl Harbors,” with different impacts and memories for diverse Americans and for people throughout the world." Visits to historical sites; meetings with Pearl Harbor survivors and Japanese-American who spent time in the U.S. internment camps; discussions; pedagogical sessions; and curriculum development will be included.

Landmarks of the Underground Railroad: From Christiana to Harper's Ferry

Description

During this workshop, "site visits integrated with documentary evidence will push participants to broaden their understanding of what did - and did not - constitute an Underground Railroad escape. Participants will discover that fugitives and the northerners who protected them were often as likely to fight as flee when confronted by slave catchers in the 1850s. Study of two nearby historic sites, Christiana, Pennsylvania, and Harpers Ferry, West Virginia will provide new insights into the aggressive operations of the Railroad and help frame the story of the coming of the Civil War. By the end of the workshop teachers will draft lesson plans that incorporate both episodes and offer a fresh approach to the study of the Underground Railroad."

Specific topics will include "The Landscape of Urban Enslavement," "Resistance to Slavery in the Nation’s Capital," "Emancipation and Civil War Washington, "Institutions of Reconstruction: The Freedman’s Bureau and the Freedman’s Savings and Trust Company," "Frederick Douglass and the Politics of Reconstruction, "Community, Activism, and Desegregation: 1900-1954," to be explored through visits to historic landmarks, lectures, teaching resource sessions, and curriculum project development.

Fort Fred Steele State Historic Site [WY]

Description

Fort Fred Steele was established on June 20, 1868 and occupied until August 7, 1886 by soldiers who were sent by the U.S. Government to guard against attack from Indians. The construction of the Transcontinental Union Pacific Railroad across southern Wyoming 1867–1869, in turn, brought the cattlemen, sheepherders, loggers, tie hacks, miners, and merchants who changed the wasteland into Wyoming Territory. Colonel Richard I. Dodge, who selected this site on the west bank of the North Platte River, named the fort for Major General Frederick Steele, 20th U.S. Infantry, a Civil War hero.

Big Mound Battlefield State Historic Site [ND]

Description

A headstone here marks the place where Dr. Josiah S. Weiser was shot on July 24, 1863. This death precipitated the Battle of Big Mound, a skirmish between General Henry H. Sibley's Minnesota Volunteers and a group of Sioux who were believed to have been involved in the Dakota Conflict of 1862.

McPhail's Butte Overlook [ND]

Description

This site marks a position from which Colonel Samuel McPhail directed the movements of the First Minnesota Rangers in the Battle of Big Mound on July 24, 1863, during Sibley's expedition. There is a marker on the site.

Grinter Place State Historic Site

Description

A trip to Grinter Place offers a look inside the oldest home in Wyandotte County, as well as a step back to the days of frontier life along the Kansas and Missouri border. Overlooking the historic Delaware Crossing on the Kansas River, Grinter Place was the home to Annie and Moses Grinter. Annie, a Lenape (Delaware) Indian, helped to farm, raise poultry and livestock, and planted an apple orchard. Moses operated a ferry and a trading post, where he traded with the Lenape Indians.
