Hunterdon County Historical Society

Description

The Hunterdon County Historical Society's library has been in existence since the Society was founded in 1885. In 1963, through the bequest of the late Hiram E. Deats, over 3,000 items were added. These included his personal library and notes on the places and families of Hunterdon County. Today, the library consists of 5,000 printed volumes, manuscripts, newspapers, maps, broadsides, and photographs gathered and preserved since the Society was founded.

The Library is housed in the Doric House, an 1846 Greek Revival structure furnished in authentic Hunterdon antiques of the period.

The House offers tours by appointment and access to the Library.

Le Sueur County Historical Society and Museum [MN]

Description

The Society's Museum is housed in a two-story red brick structure designed by George Pass and built in 1895—one of the few remaining examples of late 19th-century schoolhouse architecture. The Museum interprets the history of Le Sueur County through a collection that includes a prehistoric bison skull, one-room school, general store, vintage toy displays, church artifacts, Victorian rooms, and Native American objects. An Art Room showcases area artisans and exhibits honoring the work of Adolf Dehn, Roger Preuss, and David Maass.

The museum offers exhibits and research library access.

The China Trade

Description

Using ESSEX History examines local history at its best in this seminar lookubg at Salem and the China Trade with Salem State's Dr. Dane Morrison. Dr. Morrison will lead attendees through a discussion of the economic and maritime history of Salem during the China Trade and the ways in which this vast trading network affected the economy and culture of Essex County. This seminar will take place at the House of the Seven Gables—a stone's throw from historic Derby Wharf, the center of the China Trade. In the afternoon, teachers will be introduced to some of the Peabody Essex Museum's vast collections of China Trade artifacts.
