Safety Learning Center and Fire Museum [OR]

Description

The Safety Learning Center and Fire Museum presents fire safety information and the history of firefighting in the U.S. via a variety of relevant artifacts. Collection highlights include historic pumpers, hose carts, ladders, firefighting garb, and a circa 1865 roster board.

The center offers tours, hands-on activities, and home fire safety consultations. Reservations are required for tours.

Oregon Maritime Museum

Description

The Oregon Maritime Museum presents the history of river usage in Oregon and the Great Basin. The collection includes the 1947 stern-wheel tugboat Portland and the 1930 square-rigged fishing vessel Mom's Boat.

The museum offers guided tours and outreach speakers.

Willamette Mission State Park [OR]

Description

The Willamette Mission State Park commemorates the location of the first mission created for Native Americans, founded 1834 by Reverend Jason Lee. The Wheatland Ferry, which carried the first covered wagon across the Willamette River in 1844, also has a landing in the park.

The park offers a monument, ghost structures (framed outlines) indicating the original buildings, and interpretive signage.

Garibaldi Museum [OR]

Description

The Garibaldi Museum presents information concerning Captain Robert Gray; his historical vessels, the Lady Washington and the Columbia Rediviva; trade with the Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest; and the maritime world of the 1700's. Gray discovered the Columbia River on May 11, 1792. During James Madison's second term as President (1813–1817), the U.S. used this discovery to lay claim to the Oregon Country. Among the museum displays are models of the Columbia Rediviva and Lady Washington; an 8–foot–tall reproduction of the Columbia Rediviva's figurehead; a half model of the same vessel, showing how the ship was provisioned for the long voyage; reproduction seafarers' garb; and musical instruments. One wing of the museum is devoted to the history of the City of Garibaldi, displaying pictures and artifacts from the turn of the century.

The museum offers exhibits, several of which are interactive; scholarships for local high school seniors and Tillamook Bay Community College students; and a 4th grade education program.

A.R. Bowman Memorial Museum [OR]

Description

The A.R. Bowman Memorial Museum presents a wide range of displays detailing Crook County history including the City of Prineville Railroad, the ups and downs of the timber industry, and a military exhibit. Along with these major exhibits the museum offers historically accurate depictions of pioneer life and local history. The stone building housing the museum was built as the Crook County Bank in 1910.

The museum offers physical exhibits, an online exhibit, and a research library.

Tillamook Air Museum [OR]

Description

The Tillamook Air Museum, housed in a WWII blimp hangar, is one of the top five privately owned aircraft collections in the United States. Collection highlights include over 30 war planes—a P–38 Lightning, F4U–Corsair, P51–Mustang, PBY Catalina, and SBD Dauntless dive bomber—pieces of the Hindenburg, and a WWII Luftwaffe flight jacket.

The museum offers exhibits, a jet simulator, and a cafe.

Troutdale Historical Society [OR]

Description

The Troutdale Historical Society owns and operates three museums in the Troutdale region. The Barn Museum and Harlow House are historical house museums that are open by appointment. The Rail Depot showcases the history of the railroad next to Troutdale and also serves as a more general local history museum.

The society offers guided tours of the Barn and Harlow House Museums, as well as special presentations and exhibits in the Rail Depot. The website offers visitor information, online versions of the society newsletter, and an events calendar.

Umpqua Lighthouse State Park [OR]

Description

The Umpqua Lighthouse State Park offers tours of the 1894 lighthouse and an adjacent museum.

The park offers a lighthouse museum that showcases the history of the lighthouse, guided tours of the lighthouse, and a variety of outdoor activities. The website offers visitor information, a downloadable map, and a brief history of the site.
