The Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving history, protecting nature and open space, and creating tourism destinations in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor. The Association also manages the Gaylord Building, a National Trust Historic Site, in Lockport, Illinois. One of the oldest industrial buildings in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, the 1838 Gaylord Building is a model of adaptive reuse, featuring the Public Landing restaurant, canal exhibits and more. More than 150 years ago, the Gaylord Building played a major role in creation of the Illinois & Michigan Canal, the final link in America’s great water highway system of the 19th century. The Building also serves as a base for the Lockport Sleepers Vintage Base Ball Club, composed of living historians who interpret the national pastime as it was played in the late 1850s.

The association offers lectures and educational and recreational events; the building offers exhibits, tours, occasional living history events, and educational and recreational programs.

The Museum presents displays recreating four authentic street scenes, representing each quarter of the 20th century, with autos, artifacts, and sounds from each era. Street scenes also display building facades and a timeline of events chronicling the history of the automobile. The Museum also presents changing exhibits.

Cambridge Junction Historic State Park is the site of Walker Tavern, a major stopping place for stagecoaches traveling between Detroit and Chicago in the early 19th century. The site tells the story of taverns and stagecoach travel for early Michigan residents.

This 17-room Victorian home, topped by a third-floor ballroom, has been carefully restored by the Society to its original turn-of-the-century splendor and features the unique treasures of the original furniture and antiques that were the property of Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah E. Reeves, arranged as they would have been 100 years ago. These beautiful family furnishings can be viewed up close, as there are no ropes or barriers prohibiting entrance into the rooms. The Carriage House Museum, located behind the home, contains an interesting collection of vehicles—the family's handsome, horse-drawn carriage, along with the family sleigh, a rare electric car, and a newly restored doctor's buggy. Throughout the carriage house are numerous displays and artifacts that trace Dover's past, a past quite typical of many small towns in America.

The Seneca Museum celebrates historic Seneca Falls, Seneca County, and the Finger Lakes region of central New York State. The Museum illustrates how the Seneca River and the Cayuga-Seneca Canal powered the rise of industry and fostered cultural development, helping to spread social reform movements.

The Museum features interactive exhibits that combine history and technology. Visitors of all ages will experience what it is like to pilot a tugboat, participate in a Coast Guard rescue on the Columbia River Bar, and live in Astoria during the height of the salmon fishing. Huge windows make the Columbia River a living backdrop for classic fishing vessels and Coast Guard rescue craft. Visitors can experience first hand how the Bar Pilots work the dangerous wind and waves during a fierce winter storm in the award-winning orientation film "The Great River of the West." They can walk on board the bridge of a World-War-II-era US Navy Destroyer; see the world-class collection of maritime artifacts; and then walk out to the dock to explore the Lightship Columbia, a floating lighthouse.

In one of Maryland's first state parks (1907), the valley and its natural resources have been enjoyed by the Native Americans, explorers, settlers, and present-day citizens. With its source in Frederick and Carroll counties, the Patapsco serves the Port of Baltimore, and empties into the Chesapeake Bay. The Avalon Visitor Center houses exhibits spanning over 300 years of history along the Patapsco River. Housed in a 19th-century stone dwelling in the Avalon Area, the center includes a recreation of a 1930s forest warden's office. The park contains several historic sites, including the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the Thomas Viaduct, remains of the Orange Grove Mill, the Avalon Iron and Nail Works, and Bloedes Dam.

With three permanent collections and a membership in the Smithsonian Affiliations Program, the Museum offers a wide range of exhibits, including a glimpse into the daily lives of soldiers during the Civil War; a reproduction of a turn-of-the-century locomotive factory; and an exciting depiction of the Civil War's Great Locomotive Chase.

The Center consists of two historical museums and surrounding outdoor exhibits. The Historical Museum depicts life on the plains during the American pioneer movement and westward expansion periods. Exhibits treat topics including Native American and pioneer life, railroads, agriculture, and the Victorian and cow-town eras. The Museum of Independent Telephony recreates the unique flavor of early independent telephone system history with hands-on displays of antique telephones, insulators, switchboards, and pay stations. Outside is the Pioneer Community, with actual buildings from around the county and the Parker Carousel, a national landmark carousel. Exhibits include a log cabin, barn, store, phone office, agriculture equipment, windmill, chickens and more.
