All participants in this Montpelier-sponsored program will receive a free set of We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution textbooks; a lecture by Constitutional Scholar Stephen Frantzich and a signed copy of his book; lesson demonstrations by teachers at the elementary, middle, and high school levels; Representative Democracy of America free resources and training (DVDs and books); elementary, middle, and high school resources for the teaching of Constitution Day; and Project Citizen sessions for middle and high school teachers with free textbooks.

The workshop is open to teachers in Northern Virginia, the District of Columbia, and Prince George County, Maryland.

The Academy: Innovative Humanities Resources to Reach and Teach History and Government

Description

The Academy offers educators content and strategies for teaching the "Seven Principles of Constitutionalism" and the "U.S. Constitution in Time of Crisis." Important events and decisions concerning equality in American history will also be studied. A team of talented scholars and consultants will present information and lessons dealing with TAKS Objectives One and Four. A variety of demonstrated lessons will incorporate multi-use visuals, music, and interactive strategies.

The Supreme Court

Description

This course is an intensive study of the highest court in the federal judiciary, focusing on the place of the Supreme Court in the American constitutional order. Areas of study may include the relationship between the Court and the other branches of the federal government as well as the states; the Court's power of judicial review; and judicial politics and statesmanship. The institute will examine these kinds of issues by investigating how the Court has interpreted the Constitution in some of its most historic decisions.

We the People 101: The Citizen and the Constitution

Description

This Center for Civic Education curriculum provides lessons and activities for grades 4–12. The primary goal of the program is to promote civic awareness and responsibility in students. By emphasizing student involvement and encouraging students to relate important concepts and principles to historical and contemporary situations, it strengthens students' critical thinking and public speaking skills.
