The Demuth Museum presents the life and art work of Charles Demuth (1883-1935), as well as his historic late 18th-century family home. Demuth developed the artistic style called Precisionism; and he primarily utilized watercolors and oils. Next door is the Demuth's tobacco shop, established 1770, making it the oldest tobacco shop in the United States. The shop operates as a retail business, and is not part of the museum.
Although not open to the public, visitors are welcome to view the house from the outside as Grant Wood did in 1930 when he was inspired by its unusual Gothic window. Visitors can enjoy the collection of American Gothic parodies, an educational exhibit, and videos on Grant Wood's life.
The Eureka Heritage Society provides leadership, education, and advocacy to preserve and enhance Eureka's irreplaceable historic structures and neighborhoods so as to ensure a legacy for future generations. It maintains the Romano Gabriel Garden, fashioned from discarded crates and boards by Romano Gabriel, a carpenter turned sculptor. The garden has been "transplanted" and is now housed in a glass exhibit area for viewing.
The society offers occasional recreational and educational events; the garden is open to the public as a viewable exhibit.
Expert on African-American textiles Gladys-Marie Fry looks at the symbolism found in quilts made by African-American men in slavery. She examines two quilts in particular, one a wedding present for an owner, containing African religious and mythological symbols, and the second a quilt depicting medicinal herbs.
Participants in this institute will interact with scientists studying Maine's unique environment; explore the wide range of National Park Service resources available to teachers; visit an offshore island and learn how early artists, Native Americans, and coastal environments can intersect in your classroom; and develop multidisciplinary activities to take back to their classrooms.
This four-week institute will use Winslow Homer's paintings as the point of departure for a voyage of discovery about maritime history in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The goal is not only to understand the period historically and culturally, but also to explore multiple source materials for discovering the past, including works of art and literature, objects, landscapes, the built environment, descendant communities and a range of historical documents in order to synthesize these various perspectives. Participants will develop cross-disciplinary lessons and teaching materials for classrooms.
UMass Dartmouth is willing to grant continuing education units (CEU) to participants and the Institute Directors will convey proper letters of documentation to participants' districts or school boards on university letterhead.
This institute explores the primary pictorial forms in American art from the British colonial settlement to the aftermath of the Civil War. The three units—portraiture, history painting, and landscape—will include a particular focus on works drawn from the National Endowment for the Humanities' new initiative "Picturing America." This NEH poster series, which has already been distributed to thousands of schools, captures 40 canonical works of American art that reflect the artistic and cultural history of the United States. Through the institute, participants will come to a deeper understanding of these works in their historical contexts and explore different methods of visual analysis. They will develop strategies and tools to use the "Picturing America" series in their classrooms.
Teachers will receive professional development points according to the guidelines of their school districts. Participants can also choose to earn graduate credit from Salem State College.
