Battleship Cove [MA]

Description

Battleship Cove is the largest collection of historic naval ships in the world. The cove boasts four large World War II-era battleships, along with a collection of smaller boats and naval helicopters.

The cove offers a variety of tours which can be adapted to any age group, a collection of naval ships available for tours, and a small museum with naval history exhibits. The website offers historical information regarding all of the cove's ships, visitor information, and an events calendar.

Jerome County Historical Society and Museum and Idaho Farm and Ranch Agricultural Museum [ID]

Description

The Society operates a local history museum, the Jerome County Historical Museum, as well as the Idaho Farm and Ranch Agricultural Museum. The latter displays many specimens of old farm equipment and original buildings from the surrounding area, including an exhibit from the World War II Minidoka Japanese Relocation Camp that was located at Hunt, ID in Jerome County.

The society and Jerome County Historical Museum offer exhibits, tours, and research library access; the Agricultural Museum offers exhibits, tours, and occasional recreational and educational events (including living history events).

Cape May Point State Park and Lighthouse [NJ]

Description

The 157-foot-high lighthouse is still an aid to navigation. Visitors who climb the 199 steps to the top of the lighthouse are rewarded with a panoramic view of the Cape May peninsula. The first known lighthouse at Cape May was built in 1823. By 1847 a new lighthouse was erected on a high bluff; however, due to the encroaching sea and poor building design it was eventually dismantled. Built in 1859, the current lighthouse used the original bricks of the 1847 lighthouse. Also on the site is a World War II bunker, built as part of the Harbor Defense Project of 1942.

The site offers exhibits, tours, and educational and recreational events.

Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park and Kodiak Military History Museum

Description

The historic ruins of a World War II coastal defense installation coupled with the steep surf-pounded cliffs, deep spruce forests, wildflower-laden meadows, and a lake containing trout offer the public an opportunity to learn of the events of World War II while enjoying the natural beauty of the park. A museum in the park further explores the World War II history of the site.

The museum offers exhibits.

Los Alamos Historical Society and Museum [New Mexico]

Description

The Society maintains the Los Alamos Historic Museum and Bookshop as well as the Los Alamos Historical Archives. The Los Alamos Historical Museum is dedicated to preserving, protecting, and interpreting the history of Los Alamos. Housed in the Guest Cottage of the Los Alamos Ranch School—a favorite place of Gen. Leslie Groves during the Manhattan Project—the museum features exhibits on local geology, anthropology, the 1917 elite Ranch School, and the Manhattan Project, as well as changing exhibits.

The society offers lectures and educational programs; the museum offers exhibits, tours, and educational programs.

National Naval Aviation Museum

Description

At the Museum, visitors can experience hands-on history displays on naval aviation and see more than 150 restored aircraft representing Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard aviation. They can feel the sensations of flight in a flight simulator or visit the Naval Aviation Memorial Theater and view an IMAX film.

The museum offers exhibits, tours, film screenings, and educational and recreational programs.

Phelps County Historical Society and Nebraska Prairie Museum

Description

The mission of the Nebraska Prairie Museum is to be a historical, interactive resource for the community, through the collection of artifacts, archival documents, and memorabilia that explain the lifestyles of the area's past residents. The Museum contains over one acre of indoor exhibits, including collections of period clothing, antique toys, farm equipment, tools, and household items, as well as a unique World War II German POW exhibit room.

The museum offers exhibits, tours, and research library access.
