Toledo Firefighters Museum

Description

"Founded in 1976 for the purpose of preserving the history of the Toledo Fire Division and educating citizens about fire prevention and safety. In memory of fallen firefighters, the two-story museum is located in a working fire station, "Old Number 18 Fire House", circa 1920, which was replaced by a new station in 1975."

Lincoln Heritage Museum

Description

Located on the campus of the only college named for Abraham Lincoln in his lifetime, the award-winning Lincoln Heritage Museum exhibits a significant collection of Abraham Lincoln and Civil War related artifacts, as well as local and Lincoln College history, Presidential letters, and a tribute to September 11, 2001. On display are such items as several 1860 Lincoln presidential campaign banners, a ballot box in which he voted, several of his personal books (including Shakespeare), and tools, several furnishings from the Lincoln's Springfield home, and Lincoln family personal items including Mary Lincoln's jewelry.

Admission to the museum is free, and museum staff supply schools with personalized and living history tours catered to the topics being covered in individual classes.

Mountain Home Historical Society and Museum

Description

The local historical society, founded in 1961, opened the Elmore County Museum in a vacated Carnegie Library building in 1977. Built in 1908, the museum building is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Among the artifacts displayed inside are mining, agriculture, and railroad implements. The museum also focuses on the cultural heritage of the community, including Basque, Chinese, and Native American legacies.

The museum offers exhibits.

Fresno Metropolitan Museum of Art and Science [CA]

Description

The Fresno Metropolitan Museum of Art and Science involves the public in an active exploration of science, the arts, and local history. Permanent collections include Central Vallery Native American baskets and cradleboards and 19th-through-20th-century California landscape paints; temporary exhibits may be relevant to U.S. history studies.

The museum offers exhibits, film screenings, lectures, children's camps and workshops, tours for school groups, in-class outreach art workshops (grades 1-3), Visual Thinking Strategies outreach presentations and professional development training, and Met on the Move after-school programs.

End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center [OR]

Description

The End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center presents the history of the Oregon Trail, one of the historically most widely used routes of migration within the United States. Its period of most concentrated use was the Great Migration of 1843, also known as the Wagon Train of 1843. The site includes a visitor's center and gardens with period plants.

The center offers interpreters in period dress, hands-on activities, exhibits, cedar carving demonstrations, and a garden.

Upsala Area Historical Society [MN]

Description

The Upsala Area Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of the farming community of Upsala, Minnesota. To this end, the society operates a museum located within the 1913 Axel Borgstrom House. Exhibits cover local and state history, as well as the area's Swedish heritage.

Harrison County Historical Museum [Texas]

Description

Located in the historic Ginocchio Hotel in the Historical Ginocchio District, the county's museum houses an extensive collection of Caddo Indian artifacts; antique toys; Civil War memorabilia; and mementos from famous citizens of Harrison County, including Lady Bird Johnson, George Foreman,, Bill Moyers, Y.A. Tittle, and James Farmer. A "Hands On" history room contains activities for children of all ages, and the Research Library offers resources for genealogical research.

The museums offers exhibits and research library access.

Lloyd Historical Preservation Society

Description

The Society's mission is to protect and preserve the historical heritage of Lloyd; to support all individuals, groups or agencies that sustain this goal; and to educate and share this historical heritage with the citizens of the Town of Lloyd. It works to protect and preserve local historic sites and materials, educate residents and students on local history, create a museum of local history, preserve the area cemeteries and their history, publish articles of local historic interest, conduct tours of historic sites, record reminiscences of Lloyd citizens to preserve local history, and discover and document the community's past to enrich the town's future.
