The Portland Harbor Museum presents the maritime history of New England's Portland Harbor. Available topics for educational programming include Casco Bay lighthouses, the forts of Portland Harbor, 19th-century clipper ships, 19th-century Portland Harbor, modern Portland Harbor, and the liberty ships of World War II.

The Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society seeks to preserve and share maritime history—with an emphasis on the history of Puget Sound. To this end, the society operates a research library. The library, located in the Museum of History and Industry, includes 4,500 volumes, more than 100 periodicals, 15,000 photographs of maritime vessels, and 40,000 negatives.

Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site commemorates the site at which English settlers landed in 1670. From there, they established a settlement which would eventually birth the plantation system, the Carolina Colony, and a major maritime commerce center. The site includes a 12-room museum; a 17th-century replica maritime vessel, the trading ketch Adventure; a natural habitat zoo; reconstructed fortifications; and 80 acres of gardens. The zoo houses animal species which lived in South Carolina circa 1670.
The site offers interactive exhibits; musket, cannon, and open hearth cooking demonstrations; hands-on activities; guided and self-guided educational programs which correspond to state educational standards; audio tours; gardens; interpretive trails; and picnic areas. Strollers and wheelchairs are available for use on site.
The Newbold-White House is a 1730 Quaker Colonial residence used to present the history of Northeastern North Carolina. In addition to the home, the 143-acre grounds hold a walking trail, a 17th-century Quaker cemetery, a kitchen garden, and a reconstructed smokehouse. The Periauger, an 18th-century work boat replica, is also available for specific programs.
The house offers 45-minute guided tours, a video about the Periauger, folk and decorative arts exhibits, customizable school tours, and a children's summer sailing program. Please note that the site is only partially handicapped accessible.
The Penobscot Marine Museum presents the 19th-century history of Penobscot Bay's maritime industry and recreation, as well as the history of maritime professionals from the area who sailed elsewhere. Areas of focus include square-riggers and trade with China. Collection highlights include 19th-century work and recreation vessels; marine artworks by Thomas Buttersworth, James Buttersworth, Robert Salmon, and Antonio Jacobsen; and more than 30,000 glass plate photographs. The museum consists of 12 historic structures, forming a "village" with buildings dating from between 1810 and 1845. One of these is furnished as a Victorian era sea captain's home. The museum owns the 1949 sardine carrier Jacob Pike.
The museum offers a children's room, interactive and traditional exhibits, period rooms, tours, outreach presentations, summer day camps, 10 educational programs, and library access. The library is open by appointment only, and research assistance requires payment. The museum is partially handicapped accessible. The San Diego Maritime Museum presents one of the world's strongest collections of historic vessels. Highlights include an 1898 steam ferry, the Berkeley; a 1904 steam yacht, the Medea; a B-39 Soviet attack submarine; and the 1863 Star of India, the world's oldest active ship. Replicas include the HMS Surprise, an 18th-century Royal Navy Frigate used in the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, and the Californian, a mid-1800s revenue cutter. Exhibits include the ages of sail and steam, the Navy, navigation and surveying, and the tuna industry.
The museum offers one- or two-hour historic cruises on the 1914 Pilot; overnight and day history role playing educational programs; science programs; an educational sailing program aboard the Californian; guided museum tours; exhibits; tours of the Star of India, HMS Surprise, B-39 Submarine, Berkeley, and the Medea; and world cruises led by historians. The Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild preserves and operates two historic vessels—the 1902 barkentine Gazela and the 1902 tugboat Jupiter.

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum presents the history of maritime activity in Chesapeake Bay, one of the major maritime regions of the United States. The museum consists of nine buildings located on 18-acres of land. Topics covered include trans-Atlantic trade in the 18th and 19th centuries, naval history, boat building, Native American ways of life, and the various maritime uses of the Chesapeake Bay. Maritime professionals staff the museum to share their experiences with visitors.

The U.S.S. Constellation serves as a museum of its own history. The vessel is the final sail-powered warship built by the Navy, and the last floating Civil War era vessel. Education program topics include African Americans in the Navy, life at sea as a powder monkey, the Constellation's efforts against the slave trade, and the construction of the sloop-of-war.

The Working Waterfront Maritime Museum, housed in the last intact remaining timber frame warehouse section in the area, presents the history of Tacoma's working waterfront. Collections include Andrew Foss rowboats, Willits canoes, and photographs by maritime photographer Wilhelm Hester (born 1872).
