Museum of Aviation Flight and Technology Center [GA]

Description

The Museum houses a collection of over 100 aircraft, missiles, and cockpits dating from a replica of an early 1896 glider to modern-era aircraft such as the B-1B bomber, the SR-71 Blackbird, the U-2 Dragon Lady and F-15 Eagle. Exhibits tell the story of aviation events from World War II to the present, including exhibits depicting the mission of Robins Air Force Base, the largest industrial employer in Georgia.

Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village [MI]

Description

The Henry Ford Museum presents U.S. ideas and inventions. Exhibit topics include agriculture; clockwork; automobiles; Presidential limousines; furnishings; manufacturing; jewelry; home appliances; R. Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion House, a 1940s house of the future; aviation; human rights within the United States; silver; pewter; transportation; and 20th-century generations. Collection highlights include Abraham Lincoln's chair from Ford's Theatre, one of George Washington's camp beds, a replica of the Wright brothers' Flyer, the limousine in which John F. Kennedy was assassinated, a Gothic steam engine, and the Goldenrod. The Goldenrod broke world land speed records in 1965. The 80-acre Greenfield Village incorporates 83 historic structures. District themes include the railway, an 1880s working farm, Thomas Alva Edison, home life between the 17th and 20th centuries, historic skills, and the Model T Ford.

The museum offers exhibits, three curriculum-based guided activity programs, one curriculum-based dramatic presentation, and cafes. The village offers exhibits, interactive activities, the opportunity to ride historic vehicles, eight curriculum-based dramatic presentations, a self-guided activity for students, restaurants, and a food stall. The site also offers teacher workshops, a teacher fellow program, summer camps, Scout programs, and a youth mentorship program. Wheelchairs and electric scooters are available for use on site. The village is closed between January and mid-April. San Diego Air and Space Museum [CA]

Description

The Museum provides visitors with a journey through the history of flight. Visitors may stand beneath a model of the Montgolfier brothers' hot air balloon of 1783—the first manned vehicle in recorded history to lift man above the Earth. They can view specimens of aircraft from World War I, or marvel at the antics of the barnstormers of the 1920s. Mint condition aircraft help visitors appreciate the increasingly complex technology represented in the classic military aircraft of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, and exhibits on space flight project aeronautics into the future.

Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum [SC]

Description

The Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum presents U.S. Naval and air history and technology via a collection of Navy vessels and World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and modern military planes. The USS Yorktown, a World War II aircraft carrier; 24 historical military aircraft; the USS Laffey, a World War II destroyer; the USS Clamagore, a Cold War Balao-class submarine; the USCGC Ingham, a World War II and drug bust cutter; a Congressional Medal of Honor exhibit; a Vietnam War Naval Support Base Camp replica; and the Cold War Submarine Memorial are all located on site.

The museum offers traditional and interactive exhibits, guided group tours, self-guided tours, a youth overnight program, curriculum-based history and science educational programs for students, scavenger hunts for students, youth leadership and history seminars, two snack bars, and food options in the mess hall. The mess hall only offers food between April and November. The USS Laffey, USS Clamagore, and USCGC Ingham offer little to no wheelchair accessibility. Groups must contain at least 15 paid visitors.

The USS Laffey is closed until further notice for repairs.

Quonset Air Museum [RI]

Description

The Rhode Island Quonset Air Museum (QAM) preserves, interprets, and presents Rhode Island's aviation history through collections, research, education, and exhibits. The air museum educates the public in the state's rich aviation legacy and displays collections that document the contributions of Rhode Island to the growth and development of aviation and space exploration.

Grissom Air Museum State Historic Site [IN]

Description

The Grissom Air Museum is one of the nation's fastest growing aviation museums, and features an impressive collection of military aircraft. The museum's aircraft are located outside, and can be viewed from the museum's Cold War era observation tower. Inside the museum, the museum has a variety of airplane technology and memorabilia displays, along with a wall of honor.

Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation and Aviation Museum [CA]

Description

The Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation was founded in 1999, and has a mission to support the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar Command Museum. The Foundation does this mainly by providing volunteers and additional funding to support limited Department of Defense funding. The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum is one of only four certified Marine Corps Command Museums, and is the only museum in the world dedicated to preserving the history of the U.S. Marine Corps aviation. The museum boasts a collection of over 40 vintage aircraft, an extensive research library, photos, video, and valuable memorabilia and artifacts.

Pioneer-Krier Museum

Description

When the Clark County Historical Society was organized in 1939, it was with the understanding that the society should aquire a building to house the relics in their possession. The current Pioneer-Krier Museum was built in 1968, and has served as the museum ever since, with an addition added in 1974 in order to house two of Harold Krier's airplanes.

The site offers virtual tours for all exhibits offered by the museum as well as general museum information.

Armstrong Air and Space Museum [OH]

Description

Named in honor of Neil Armstrong, first person to set foot on the moon, this museum chronicles the history of spaceflight and Ohio's contributions to such endeavors. Among the items on display are a F5D Sky Lancer, the Gemini VIII spacecraft, Apollo 11 artifacts and a moon rock. In the museum's Astro-theater, multimedia presentations of the sights and sounds of space unfold against a starry background.

The museum offers exhibits, tours, and multimedia presentations for museum visitors. The museum also offers a variety of academic content standards-based educational programming. The programming is available for school groups, community organizations, and scout troops. Available after school during monthly sessions is the Young Astronaut Program designed for young children in grades 2-7 curious about space exploration and travel. Virginia Air and Space Center

Description

The Virginia Air and Space Center serves as the visitor center for NASA Langley Research Center and Langley Air Force Base. Visitors' imaginations will soar as they launch a rocket, pilot a space shuttle, and come face-to-face with the Apollo 12 Command Module and a DC-9 passenger jet. They can also experience a 3D IMAX film in the Riverside IMAX Theater.
