Description

Students often struggle to understand the increasingly complex content and vocabulary presented in social studies. Frustrated teachers often feel that it is easier to just cover the information presented instead of working to help students make meaningful connections. Effective strategies increase students learning and build scores on standardized social studies reading and writing tests. This workshop will share successful strategies that target the unique features and constructions of social studies texts as well as other forms of nonfiction and fiction. Handouts and materials provided can be used immediately to modify social studies instruction.

Participants in this workshop will use resources from the Buck Institute and others to focus on both the theory and implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Who killed the Iceman? What really happened at the Battle of the Little Big Horn? What became of the lost colony of Roanoke? Who was the Man in the Iron Mask? How did Cortez conquer the Aztecs? Teachers can use these and mysteries like them to focus student attention and meet state standards. During this workshop, educators will be presented with resources, examples, and time to begin constructing their own history mystery unit.

Talking Walls

Description

This hands-on, interactive program puts teachers and their students in touch with local Cobb County historic resources while they learn about the cultural and folk traditions of their community. The "classroom" includes East Cobb's 1840s Hyde Farm and Power Cabin, Acworth's Rosenwald School and Bethel A.M.E. Church, Marietta's Root House Museum, and the Marietta Museum of History. The program brings the classroom to the streets of Marietta, with walking tours of the Church Street-Cherokee Street Historic District and the Marietta City Cemetery. In a more traditional classroom setting, the teachers attend sessions on oral history and architectural history.

The Culture of Textiles in North Carolina: Past, Present, and Future

Description

There is virtually no area of study that cannot shed light on the textile culture of North Carolina. Literature, music, science, economics, history, sociology, religion, and art help define and explain the rich history and changing culture of North Carolina textiles. Beginning in the 1880s, the textile industry built the "new south." Today, changes in this industry are helping to create another "new south." In this interdisciplinary seminar, participants will explore not only textile history but will also think about the role and importance of textiles. What the “product” was/is, how it is made and by whom, and where it is made have implications for the rapidly changing nature of textiles in North Carolina and the South.

Civil War Washington Teacher Seminar and Fellowship

Description

DC Public and Public Charter School Teachers are invited to participate in a five-day learning adventure that will immerse participants in the Civil War history of Washington and the country. By preparing and performing historical speeches, interpreting letters, and "reading" artifacts, images, and places, they will develop teaching techniques that strengthen reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.

Over the course of five mornings, participants will travel to three historic sites in some of Washington's most historic neighborhoods. In the afternoons, they will participate in interpretations of important speeches and letters, and learn tools that lead to rigorous visual and experiential learning. Teachers who attend the seminar also receive free school-year field trips for their students.

Participants who complete the program are eligible to receive free in-class visits from a teaching artist to support implementation of their Civil War Washington learning; a free performance of a History Play at Ford's Theatre; the opportunity to bring students to a History on Foot experience for free; special teacher preview tickets to Ford's Theatre performances and early opportunities to book seats for their students; and special teacher preparation for the Frederick Douglass Oratorical Competition.

Great American Texts: The Federalist Papers

Description

The Federalist is a complex political work comprised of arguments about war, economics, national unity, and liberty (among other things) based on appeals to human nature, history, reason, and prudence. In this course participants will examine and discuss the Federalist as fully and as deeply as possible, aiming to understand how (or whether) its parts fit together in a coherent whole and its enduring contribution to U.S. understanding of politics.
