Description

This conference will focus on the theme "Social Studies: Global and Local Connections, Shared Responsibilities." Speakers will include Martin B. Margulies of the Quinnipiac School of Law, on "Speech Rights of Public School Students After Morse v. Frederick"; former counselor to Bill Clinton Bill Curry, on the upcoming election; Matthew Warshauer of Central CT State University, on "Freedom vs. Security: Protecting Civil Liberties in an Age of Terror"; and Dr. Benjamin R. Barber, of the University of Maryland, author of books including "Jihad vs. McWorld." Clinics and workshops on many other topics will also be held.

Everyday Life in Early America

Description

The seminar will explore the lived experience of ordinary Americans during the colonial period of history. Topics will include family and household, community organization, making a living, religious belief and practice, witchcraft and magic, and shared patterns of human psychology. Material culture will also receive considerable emphasis: domestic architecture, furnishings, and the natural environment. Mornings will be devoted to lectures and discussion; afternoons to field trips and library work.

Course Credit
