The South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum is South Carolina's official state military museum. It presents the history of military actions involving South Carolinians. Collections include uniforms, weaponry, Civil War battle flags, and textiles from the 19th and 20th centuries. Wars covered include Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Seminole War, Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, and World War II. Exhibits are designed to meet state educational standards.

The museum offers exhibits, approximately one-hour school tours, monthly home school programming, Scout tours, JROTC tours, summer day camp, and teacher workshops. School tour options include a general tour and a tour with a focus on African American military history. The website offers activities to be completed at the museum, lesson plans, classroom activities, and a series of educational video clips.

North Carolina and the Civil War: Virtual Tour

Description

Historian Tom Belton guides viewers through the North Carolina Museum of History exhibit "North Carolina and the Civil War." Progressing through the war chronologically, Belton describes both military and civilian life in North Carolina during the war, briefly highlighting several of the major battles in which North Carolina was involved. This presentation is divided into 31 short subchapters, which can be accessed separately.

Newport Artillery Museum [RI]

Description

The Artillery Company of Newport operates a military museum in its Armory. The Museum houses one of the country's most extensive collections of military uniforms and memorabilia, including uniforms worn by His Royal Highness Prince Phillip; Lord Louis Mountbatten; Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery of Alamein; President Anwar Sadat of Egypt; Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz; Generals of the Army Dwight Eisenhower and Mark Clark; Generals William Westmoreland, Creighton Abrams, and Alexander Haig; and Secretary of State Colin Powell, as well as other American commanders. The Museum collection also includes four bronze cannon cast by Paul Revere in 1798 for the State of Rhode Island, three Civil War artillery pieces, a letter written to the men of the Artillery Company in 1794 by George Washington, and a Gilbert Stuart portrait of Washington, as well as numerous artifacts of particular significance to the history of the State of Rhode Island and the Artillery Company of Newport.

Description

The Francis X. Pendl Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center presents the history of firefighting in Nassau County, New York communities. Collections include historic and modern apparatus and uniforms. An interactive exhibit focuses on fire safety.

The museum offers traditional and interactive exhibits, interactive fire safety and prevention presentations for students, and senior programs.

Los Angeles Police Historical Society and Museum [CA]

Description

The Los Angeles Police Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of the Los Angeles Police Department. To this end, the society operates a museum, which displays historic police vehicles, uniforms, and weaponry, among other artifacts.

The society offers exhibits and research assistance. Research assistance requires payment of an hourly fee.

Research assistance is currently limited, as a result of staffing cut-backs.

New York City Police Museum [NY]

Description

The New York City Police Museum presents the cultural history, traditions, and policies of the New York City Police Department—the single largest police force in the world. Artifacts date back to early Dutch settlement. The site includes information relevant to September 11, 2001, as well as a memorial hall honoring officers who fell in the line of duty. Exhibit topics include police dress, transportation, communication equipment, portraits, weaponry, 9/11, and jails.

The site offers exhibits, films, and a child safety program designed for parents and guardians. Reservations are required for school groups.
