Santa Claus Museum [TX]

Description

The Santa Claus Museum presents and interprets over 1,500 Santa Claus figurines. The museum discusses the creation of the modern face of Santa Claus by Coca-Cola, Montgomery Wards, authors, and artists. Items in the collection include Thomas Nast and Norman Rockwell prints, vintage postcards, and figurines by Duncan Royale, Coca-Cola, Fitz and Floyd, Steiff, and PEZ.

The museum offers exhibits, interactive kiosks, and short films.

Friends of Ohio Barns [OH]

Description

The Friends of Ohio Barns was formed in order to provide "opportunities for barn owners, barn lovers and the folks who believe in the stewardship of Ohio's barns to be connected." In addition, the organization works to help preserve barns and farmsteads throughout the state of Ohio. The organization releases a newsletter several times throughout the year and hosts a variety of events for farm owners and preservationists.

St. Louis Building Arts Foundation [MO]

Description

"The St. Louis Building Arts Foundation promotes public awareness of the crucial role of architecture, construction, and urban design in the history and future of greater St. Louis. The Foundation's work engages not only the field of architectural history but pressing civic issues. It aims to shape the built environment today by preserving and promoting the finest traditions in the building arts." The foundation seeks to accomplish these aims through aiding local preservation projects, creating a research library, and creating a National Architectural Arts Center.

Friends of Historic Forest Grove [OR]

Description

The town of Forrest Grove, located outside of Portland, Oregon, has been an educational and economic center since its settlement in 1841. "The Friends of Historic Forest Grove's mission is to recognize National, State and local cultural resources and enhance and promote the historic environment of Forest Grove through education in areas of historic interest." The organization's main projects include the recently completed creation of the Forest Grove City Library and the restoration of the A.T. Smith House.

The site offers information about Friends of Historic Forest Grove, a virtual tour of the town, information regarding current projects, and events calendar, and an online store.

Mattamuskeet Foundation [NC]

Description

"The Mattamuskeet Foundation is a non-profit organization engaged in research and educational activities to preserve, publish, and otherwise tell the stories of the rich history and ecology of Lake Mattamuskeet and the surrounding areas of eastern North Carolina." The foundation primarily focuses on the preservation of documents, photographs, and artifacts pertaining to the history of Lake Mattamuskeet and the surrounding area. In addition, the foundation has published a book on the history of the Lake entitled "Lake Mattamuskeet: New Holland and Hyde County."

The site offers very detailed visitor information regarding the Lake and the associated Wildlife Refuge, including descriptions on all activities that are permitted in the park. In addition, the site offers information about the foundation, including past achievements and current projects, and information on the foundation's publications.

The foundation promotes a natural site, which does not appear to offer exhibits, history tours, or other interpretive media or programs.

Amityville Historical Society and Lauder Museum [NY]

Description

The mission of the Society is to operate and maintain the Lauder Museum and to encourage and promote the discovery, collection, preservation, and display of historical objects. In addition, the Society disseminates and publishes historical facts and knowledge about the activities, sites, memorabilia, and materials of the South Shore of Long Island in and around Amityville.

The museum offers exhibits, tours, and research library access.

West Adams Heritage Association [CA]

Description

The West Adams Heritage Association, founded in 1983, is dedicated to the preservation of the historic West Adams section of Los Angeles which is "located just south and west of Downtown and contains the city's largest concentration of Victorian and Craftsman homes, five of the city's Historic Preservation Overlay Zones, and a concentration of Los Angeles Historic Cultual Monuments." Major projects of the association include the promotion of commercial development of the major streets, covering graffiti, cleaning the streets, and being a voice of advocacy for the West Adams area.

The site offers historical information regarding the West Adams neighborhood, and events calendar, seven photo galleries, three user videos, and a news section containing highlights from the press and an online newsletter.

This is a community revitalization association.

Information Technology in World History Summer Institute

Description

The present age is one of globalization characterized in part by rapid developments in technology and information systems. But information and technology have often been powerful forces for historical change. This institute will place the current information and technological revolutions in world-historical perspective through a set of case studies drawn from different cultures and contexts from antiquity to the present day. In examining the effects of information and technology on political, economic, and social development, the institute will explore several major themes, including writing and print/information technology; science and society; technology and warfare; and empire and the diffusion and consolidation of knowledge. Presented by professors from the University of California, Berkeley's History Department, and organized around the Content Standards for California Public Schools, these case studies will provide a number of useful tools and strategies for teaching information and technology in world history.

Integrating Field Research Activities into Classroom Curricula

Description

Participants in this program will learn to integrate field research activities into their classroom curricula using the Schoodic Education Adventure program. The two-day institute investigates opportunities to collect field data, apply it to classroom lessons across the curricula, and connect it to real world applications in America's national parks.

Participants will create schoolyard investigation kits to take back to their classrooms; be introduced to outdoor, field-based activities that can be reproduced in a number of settings; learn classroom-based activities relating to science, social studies, technology, math, language arts, small group communication, public speaking, art, health, and citizenship; use GPS units and computers to create digital maps of study sites; qualify for student scholarships and transportation assistance to take your students to the Schoodic Education Adventure program.

Workshop activities highlight studying forest community structure, marine biodiversity, geology, soil development, and New England history.
