This workshops will explore the Facing History and Ourselves resource, Choices in Little Rock, about the desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. This resource can be used to teach civics and enrich a study of history and literature. Scholarships are available for Boston Public School (BPS) eighth-grade social studies teachers, though the workshop is open to all educators. Choices in Little Rock Orientation

Description

This half-day workshop will be an introduction to Facing History and Ourselves and our Chicago Public Schools, Choices in Little Rock Initiative. Description

Highlighting two resources from Facing History's "Making History" series, this workshop will reflect on Raphael Lemkin's tireless efforts to, in response to the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust, define and outlaw genocide. They will also examine the story of a group of women in Chile whose brightly colored tapestries, or arpilleras, played a leading role in the nonviolent movement for human rights during Pinochet's rule from 1973–1990.

This seminar explores the Facing History and Ourselves resource book, Choices in Little Rock—a collection of teaching suggestions, activities, and primary sources that focus on the desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. These efforts led to a crisis that historian Taylor Branch once described as "the most severe test of the Constitution since the Civil War." These resources explore a range of civic choices—the decisions people make as citizens in a democracy. Those decisions, both then and now, reveal that democracy is not a product but a work in progress, a work that is shaped in every generation by the choices that people make about themselves and others. This workshop will consider ways to engage students in the issues raised by this history and its civic implications for their lives today. Choices in Little Rock can be used not only to teach history but also to deepen and enrich a study of civics, government, and literature.

Saturday for Educators: Celebration of the Circus

Description

Teachers can join the incredible Windjammers Education Band for a morning of music they will not soon forget. Through the music of Karl L. King, participants can relive the circus in its heyday, learning how each piece influenced the show and kept things moving along. A full band of circus musicians will break down the pieces into smaller parts, discussing the hows and whys of circus music composition as they go. Material covered can be related to both history and music study, and the workshop will include a lecture, gallery experience, and hands-on activity or lesson plan.
