Straus Center for Conservation [MA]

Description

"The Straus Center provides analysis and treatments for the collections of the Harvard University Art Museums. These collections include more than 150,000 objects in all media, ranging in date from antiquity to the present, and coming from Europe, North America, North Africa, the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia, and East Asia." In addition to working with the collections of the Harvard Art Museums, the Straus Center for Conservation also has a strong focus on training and education. The center provides a variety of educational programs and training courses in art preservation for students and interns.

Historic Waxahachie [TX]

Description

Historic Waxahachie was organized in 1977 with the intention to "educate the public to the cultural, historic, and economic benefits of Waxahachie's unique social and architectural history." Waxahachie is notable for containing an impressive concentration of turn of the century commercial and residential architecture. Current projects of the organization include the Wyatt Building restoration, Calaboose restoration, and the upcoming railroad depot project.

The site offers basic information about the organization, information for prospective members, and information regarding the educational programs, open to the public, put on by the organization throughout the year.

Santa Claus Museum [TX]

Description

The Santa Claus Museum presents and interprets over 1,500 Santa Claus figurines. The museum discusses the creation of the modern face of Santa Claus by Coca-Cola, Montgomery Wards, authors, and artists. Items in the collection include Thomas Nast and Norman Rockwell prints, vintage postcards, and figurines by Duncan Royale, Coca-Cola, Fitz and Floyd, Steiff, and PEZ.

The museum offers exhibits, interactive kiosks, and short films.

Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society [PA]

Description

"The Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society (HMPS) is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization. It's mission is to preserve and interpret the birthplace of Samuel Steman Haldeman, by restoring its architecture and communicating its history." The Haldeman Mansion was placed on the Nation Register of Historic Places in 1977, and is most notable for its fantastic blend of German and Federal architectural styles. Currently, the home is undergoing a painstaking restoration designed to restore the home while preserving the architectural character of the house.

The site offers a biography of S.S. Haldeman, a history of the home's architecture, a photo gallery of the home featuring roughly 20 photographs, and an events calendar.

La Mesa Historical Society [CA]

Description

"From its origins as a place where cattle and sheep used to graze in the late 1800s to its period as a silent-movie mecca in the early 1900s, La Mesa has a rich and colorful past. The La Mesa Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the community's heritage for future generations." The society works to achieve these goals in two main ways, by working tirelessly to obtain, preserve, and protect artifacts and documents relating the the history of La Mesa, and by advocating for the preservation of historic La Mesa structures. The society's crown jewel is the McKinney House and Museum, which serves both as a historic house museum presenting La Mesa at the turn of the century as well as a museum of La Mesa history.

"The Architectural Heritage Center is a non-profit resource center for historic preservation, located in Portland, Oregon. Owned and operated by the Bosco-Milligan Foundation, The AHC hosts dozens of programs, workshops, and exhibits each year, helping people appreciate, restore, and maintain vintage homes, buildings, and neighborhoods. We are also caretakers of one of the largest collections of architectural artifacts in the United States." The center also maintains a library which is open to researchers by appointment.

Old State Capitol [KY]

Description

The Old State Capitol served as the state capitol for Kentucky from 1830 to 1910. The capitol is a National Historic Landmark, and is notable for its impressive architecture, which introduced the Greek-Revival architecture to states west of the Appalachian Mountains.

Description

The Okeechobee Main Street program is designed to improve all aspects of the Okeechobee downtown district. Its main goals are to improved economic management, strengthen public participation in downtown events, recruit new businesses, rehabilitate buildings and building facades, and expand parking for visitors. The organization has three main projects, the facade program which seeks to improve the look and feel of downtown through building restoration, the beautification program which improves upon landscaping downtown, and guidelines for the painting of murals downtown.
