Fairwater Historical Society [WI]

Description

Fairwater was founded in 1847 around the water power of Grand River, and has a colorful 155 year history. The society is focused on maintaining the history of the Fairwater area through several projects. First of all, the society helps to maintain the Fairwater local history site. In addition, the society has worked to preserve the Fairmont Public School Building and William Plocker's 1848 Stagecoach Inn.

The site offers a brief history of the organization as well as access to the Fairmont local history site, which contains a variety of online historical resources, including histories, records, and genealogical information.

North Brookfield Historical Society [MA]

Description

"The North Brookfield Historical Society was founded in 1975 and later incorporated, for the purpose of studying, sharing, publicizing, and preserving the history of the town. It seeks to do this through regular meetings, programs, acquiring historic objects, photographs, and printed materials." The society is currently working towards creating a museum and continues to assemble materials and artifacts pertaining to North Brookfield history and genealogy.

Cary-Grove Historical Society [IL]

Description

The Cary-Grove Historical Society is located in Cary, IL, and is dedicated to preserving the history of all of McHenry County. The society was founded in 1996 by local residents who were "concerned that the history of this area was not being preserved for future generations," and decided to take it upon themselves to correct this situation. The society is currently focused on finding a permanent site for a museum to exhibit documents, photographs, and objects from the past.

The site offers basic information regarding the society, photographs of recent events and three historical photographs of towns in McHenry County, and information on upcoming events.

Historic Preservation Society of Social Circle [GA]

Description

The Historic Preservation Society of Social Circle was founded with two goals in mind, to acquire a significant historic property to serve as society headquarters and as a community history center, and to develop a sizable membership in order to provide community based programs. With the acquisition of Gunter Hall and a membership of nearly 150, the society has achieved both of those goals. Currently, Gunter Hall is undergoing an extensive renovation. When finished, Gunter Hall will serve as a historic house museum in addition to its current role as society headquarters.

Clayton Historical Society Museum [CA]

Description

The Clayton Historical Society Museum is a local history museum with a focus on the history of Clayton, California, and the surrounding area. Current exhibits range from handmade handkerchiefs to biographical exhibits on Clayton citizens and families. In addition to the museum, the society also puts on a variety of educational events, including classes and special tours.

Save Our Steel [PA]

Description

Save Our Steel is a Bethlehem, PA, organization that is devoted to preserving the industrial history of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Currently, the organization is working with the Sands BethWorks Casino in order to help preserve Bethlehem's industrial heritage. The casino is currently being built in the old ore pits, and is scheduled to be completed in mid-2009. Save Our Steel is first and foremost an advocacy group, and has an ultimate goal to create a historical industrial district.

The site offers a photo gallery featuring 13 photographs, organization information, a calendar of events, ways to get involved, an online store, and resources for potential citizen-advocates.

This organization is planning to use the historic Bethlehem Steel site for historical interpretation, commercial functions, and residential zoning.

Redlands Area Historical Society [CA]

Description

The Redlands Area Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history, culture, genealogy, and historic architecture of Redlands, CA, and the surrounding area. The society is broken up into three sections&#8212'the society itself, which is focused on collecting historic artifacts and preserving the general history of the Redlands Area; the Redlands Area Genealogical Society, which is dedicated to preserving the genealogy of Redlands residents since the town's founding; and the Old House Group, which works to restore and preserve historic homes and other structures in the Redlands area.
