Hampton Plantation State Historic Site [SC]

Description

The Hampton Plantation State Historic Site presents the stories of slavery within the plantation system, the plantation life of African Americans post-emancipation, Lowcountry (coastal South Carolina) rice production, and colonial architecture. The 274-acre site includes an 18th-century Georgian plantation home and kitchen building.

The site offers guided tours, educational programs, interpretive trails, and a waterway canoe tour. The website offers transcriptions of letters written by plantation inhabitants.

San Diego Maritime Museum [CA]

Description

The San Diego Maritime Museum presents one of the world's strongest collections of historic vessels. Highlights include an 1898 steam ferry, the Berkeley; a 1904 steam yacht, the Medea; a B-39 Soviet attack submarine; and the 1863 Star of India, the world's oldest active ship. Replicas include the HMS Surprise, an 18th-century Royal Navy Frigate used in the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, and the Californian, a mid-1800s revenue cutter. Exhibits include the ages of sail and steam, the Navy, navigation and surveying, and the tuna industry.

The museum offers one- or two-hour historic cruises on the 1914 Pilot; overnight and day history role playing educational programs; science programs; an educational sailing program aboard the Californian; guided museum tours; exhibits; tours of the Star of India, HMS Surprise, B-39 Submarine, Berkeley, and the Medea; and world cruises led by historians. Charles A. Lindbergh House [MN]

Description

The 1906 Charles A. Lindbergh House is the childhood home of Charles Lindbergh (1902-1974), best known for his 1927 flight across the Atlantic in the Spirit of St. Louis. Today, the house contains its original furnishings. A visitor's center provides a full-scale model of the Spirit of st. Louis's cockpit that guests can enter, in addition to information on Lindbergh's life, adventures, and conservation work.

The site offers period rooms, exhibits, films, tours, an interpretive trail, and numerous field trip programs tailored to Minnesota state educational standards. Reservations are required for tours.

Historical Museum at St. Gertrude [ID]

Description

The Historical Museum at St. Gertrude presents the history of North Central Idaho. Collections include more than 10,000 archival materials; 150 years of textiles; weaponry, some of which was used in the 1877 Nez Perce War; Nez Perce artifacts; a range of historic office machinery, including a 1902 Burroughs “Moon Hopkins” bookkeeping machine and an 1895 Dactyle calculator; world minerals; mining equipment; medical artifacts, including a 1900 fetal monitor and a tonsillectomy chair; and artifacts of Chinese immigrants. The museum also owns many of Polly Bemis' previous possessions. Bemis (1853-1933), originally from China, was brought to an Idaho mining camp as a female slave. Roughly 12,000 artifacts, some of which date to the 14th century, are on display.

Canoe Creek State Park [PA]

Description

Canoe Creek State Park is located in Sinking Valley, east of Altoona, and preserves a beautiful area of the Pennsylvania countryside for visitors. The park is home to a 155-acre lake, wetlands, fields, forests, and beaches.

The park offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, swimming, hunting, fishing, and picknicking. The park also offers environmental education programs, which conform to Pennsylvania State Curriculums. The website offers visitor information and an events calendar.

High Desert Museum [OR]

Description

The High Desert Museum presents the cultural, natural, and artistic histories of the High Desert, a region within southeastern Oregon. The site includes indoor exhibits, numerous wildlife enclosures, and a living history hall and 1880 homestead.

The museum offers a 15-minute introductory presentation, exhibits, period rooms, 30-minute to full-day guided tours, self-guided tours with pre- and post-visit activities, thematic school festivals, 30- to 90-minute outreach presentations, spring and summer camps, educator workshops, wildlife demonstrations and talks, 19th-century skill demonstrations, and a cafe. At least two weeks notice is required for group visits. Contact the museum for information on box or sack lunches.

Dothan Landmark Park [AL]

Description

The Dothan Landmark Park presents the history of southeastern Alabama. Site features include a living history farm, set in the 1890s; a one-room schoolhouse; a historic church; and a historic general store. Exhibits discuss agriculture and wildlife.

The park offers exhibits, living history interpreters, nature trails, a planetarium, and a picnic site.

Heritage Museum [MT]

Description

The Heritage Museum presents the history of Lincoln County, Montana. Exhibit topics include transportation, explorers, fur trappers, the Kootenai people, mining, logging, and the natural environment. Period rooms display 19th-century life.

The museum offers exhibits and period rooms. Tours can be arranged by appointment. The museum is only open during June, July, and August.

John Burroughs Memorial State Historic Site [NY]

Description

The John Burroughs Memorial State Historic Site is located at the final resting place of famed nature writer John Burroughs. Burroughs was buried at a site overlooking a quiet field with majestic views of the Catskill Mountains.
