Las Vegas Citizens' Committee for Historic Preservation [NM]

Description

While the Las Vegas Citizens' Committee for Historic Preservation (CCHP) is focused primarily on preserving and advocating for the preservation of local historic structures, CCHP also provides a variety of events which focus on local history.

CCHP offers weekly speakers through its "Glimpses of the Past" program, tours of local historic structures and neighborhoods, and annual events such as the Las Vegas Heritage Week. Shoshone County Mining and Smelting Museum [ID]

Description

The Shoshone County Mining and Smelting Museum presents the local history of the Silver Valley, Idaho, with a particular emphasis on mining and smelting history. Exhibits cover mining, environmental history, smelting equipment, minerals, metallurgy, medicine, and electricity. Collection highlights include an 1899 Nordberg Air Compressor and scale models of the Bunker Hill and Sunshine Mines. Dating to 1906, the museum structure was built as the residence of Stanley A. Easton (died 1961), manager of the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Company.

Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation [CA]

Description

The Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation operates the Tor House and Hawk Tower. The Tor House was built in 1918 through 1919 as the residence of poet Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) and his family. The property was modeled after English Tudor barns. Jeffers later built the 1924 Hawk Tower for his wife and children. Guests who visited the Jeffers on their land include Sinclair Lewis, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Langston Hughes, Charles Lindbergh, George Gershwin, and Charlie Chaplin. The site also includes an English-style garden. Jeffers's poetry often focused on the Californian coast, and today his work is highly lauded for its environmental consciousness.

Custer State Park [SD]

Description

Custer State Park commemorates the 1874 military expedition of Lt. Colonel George A. Custer (1839-1876). He entered the Black Hills seeking a location for a Dakota Territory frontier post, to map the area, and to catalog its natural resources. These resources included gold, triggering a rush to the area and substantial environmental damage. The park also include The Badger Hole, home of Charles Badger Clark (1883-1957), first South Dakota poet laureate, and the Gordon Stockade built between 1874 and 1875. Clark is best known for his cowboy poetry.

The park offers gold panning demonstrations, hands-on gold panning, tours of The Badger Hole, and interpretive signage near the stockade. The website offers a printable geocaching activity.

National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium [IA]

Description

The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium presents the history of the Mississippi River. Topics covered include famous men who made contributions to national river culture, riverboats, Other points of interest include a Native American wikiup; a restored fur trader's cabin; and the 1934 steamer W.M. Black , which was used as a dredge boat in WWII.

Devil's Den State Park [AR]

Description

This National Historic District holds what has been called the most complete example of Civilian Conservation Corps park architecture. Selected as a park site in the 1930s, Lee Creek Valley provided the native wood and stone that the Civilian Conservation Corps used to craft the park's CCC/Rustic Style buildings and structures that include a native stone dam, a unique pavilion/restaurant, cabins in several styles and sizes, roads, trails, stone walls, bridges, and the iconic Yellow Rock Overlook.

Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site [IN]

Description

The Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site is the second home of the Hoosier author and nature photographer Gene Stratton-Porter (1863–1924). The site presents information on her life and sources of inspiration; and currently encompasses 125 acres of land, 20 of which were part of Porter’s original property. "The Cabin in Wildflower Woods," designed by Porter and built in 1913, is a two-story cabin with exterior walls of Wisconsin cedar logs. Much of Porter's furniture and personal memorabilia, including her library, are preserved at the home. In her lifetime, Porter authored seven nature books, two books of poetry, children’s books, numerous magazine articles, and 12 novels, including Song of the Cardinal and Freckles. Her personal interest was in writing about nature. However, her romantic works were most commercially successful. Stratton-Porter and her daughter, Jeanette's, graves are also on site.
