University of Mary Washington Center for Historic Preservation

Description

Established in 1980, the Center for Historic Preservation is a research and public outreach organization affiliated with the Department of Historic Preservation. The Center supports the undergraduate academic major in Historic Preservation by sponsoring lectures, workshops, symposia, and conferences; by organizing fieldwork and international study opportunities for students and faculty; and by sustaining activities that expand opportunities for students to participate in preservation-related research. To this end, the Center participates actively in local, regional and international preservation organizations. The Center also supports Historic Preservation activities by offering public programs; by undertaking cooperative research; and by providing professional services and technical assistance to organizations, property owners, and local governments and agencies.

Inventing the Charles River: From Pasture to Parkland

Description

Karl Haglund, senior planner for the Metropolitan District Commission, and Renata von Tscharner, president of the Charles River Conservancy, cover the history of human management of the Charles River, beginning in colonial times and continuing to the present. They emphasize how the river has determined development and settlement patterns in the area. Their presentation includes slides.

Neighborhood Preservation Center [NY]

Description

The Neighborhood Preservation Center is a project of the St. Mark's Historic Landmark Fund, and is dedicated towards helping and aiding organizations and citizens across New York with preservation and restoration projects dealing with both the natural and built environments. The center is housed in the 1901 Beaux Arts building, which was designed by Ernest Flag. The center is primarily a resource center which provides the public with meeting rooms, office space, and an online resource database and library, though the center also puts on educational events and exhibits from time to time.

Lower Columbia Preservation Society [OR]

Description

The Lower Columbia Preservation Society was organized in the spring of 1998 in Astoria, OR, and seeks to "preserve, protect, and promote the historic houses and buildings in the lower Columbia region." The society provides a network of support for home and business owners interested in preservation and hosts a variety of educational programs for prospective preservationists.

The site offers an events calendar, a collection of articles about preservation written for the Daily Astorian newspaper, and an online database of past society newsletters.

Okeechobee Main Street, Inc. [FL]

Description

The Okeechobee Main Street program is designed to improve all aspects of the Okeechobee downtown district. Its main goals are to improved economic management, strengthen public participation in downtown events, recruit new businesses, rehabilitate buildings and building facades, and expand parking for visitors. The organization has three main projects, the facade program which seeks to improve the look and feel of downtown through building restoration, the beautification program which improves upon landscaping downtown, and guidelines for the painting of murals downtown.

West Adams Heritage Association [CA]

Description

The West Adams Heritage Association, founded in 1983, is dedicated to the preservation of the historic West Adams section of Los Angeles which is "located just south and west of Downtown and contains the city's largest concentration of Victorian and Craftsman homes, five of the city's Historic Preservation Overlay Zones, and a concentration of Los Angeles Historic Cultual Monuments." Major projects of the association include the promotion of commercial development of the major streets, covering graffiti, cleaning the streets, and being a voice of advocacy for the West Adams area.

The site offers historical information regarding the West Adams neighborhood, and events calendar, seven photo galleries, three user videos, and a news section containing highlights from the press and an online newsletter.

Teacher Safari: Exploring the Fur Trade

Description

Educators can transition from school to summer with this two-day, traveling workshop. Both days will begin and end at the North West Company Fur Post. Educators will participate in an in-depth site experience at the Fur Post, venture out on the Snake River on a large Montreal-style canoe, and hike along portage trails used by the voyageurs. They will learn from fur trade experts, share ideas about their favorite lessons, and immerse themselves in Minnesota's fur trade history. Educators may sign up for one or both days.
