"This 3-day summer institute will give participating teachers an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Iranian culture and politics, and explore critical issues in Iranian-U.S. relations. Major themes covered during this institute will include Islam and Iranian society, the role of Islam in politics, democratic forces in Iran, the history of Iranian-U.S. relations, and current pressing issues in Iranian-U.S relations, including nuclear proliferation and Iran’s involvement in the Iraq conflict."

Standing Rock State Historic Site [ND]

Description

This site is called Inyan Bosendata by Sioux Indians who consider it sacred. The rock, four feet tall and shaped like an inverted cone, stands on a complex of prehistoric burial mounds dating from the Woodland Period (A.D. 0–1400). There is a marker on the site.

The Lovejoy State Memorial commemorates abolitionist newspaper editor Elijah P. Lovejoy, who was killed by a mob while defending his printing press at Alton on November 7, 1837. Lovejoy's grave is located nearby.
