Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site [NY]

Description

While at the location of the Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site, George Washington determined that the United States should not be a monarchy; developed the Badge of Military Merit; and foiled the Newburgh conspiracy, which would have given the military great control over the future U.S. government.

The site offers exhibits, guided tours, and educational programs. Reservations are required for school and group tours.

Olana State Historic Site [NY]

Description

Olana was created as a singular work of art by Fredrick Edwin Church (1826–1900), one of the foremost artists of the Hudson River School. Church's estate unites picturesque landscapes, romantic architecture, and scenic vistas of the Hudson River Valley. The house is restored to its 1890s appearence with original furnishings and paintings.

New Jersey Historical Society

Description

The New Jersey Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the political, sociocultural, and economic history of New Jersey. To this end, the society operates a museum and research library. Collections include fine art, furnishings, costumes, silver, glass, ceramics, and other categories.

The society offers a 15-minute orientation, exhibits, curriculum-based programs for students, walking tours, brown bag lunches, panel discussions, exhibit audioguide tours, family art and history programs, self-guided family games, customizable thematic programs, written gallery guides, activity boxes, tactile maps, research library access, research assistance, teacher workshops, and a history newsletter for students. Sign language interpretation is available with two weeks advance notice, as is Spanish language programming. Large print media and touchable objects are also available upon request. Babylon Village Historical Society and Museum [NY]

Description

The Babylon Village Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Babylon, NY and the surrounding area. To this end, the society operates a museum of local history. Exhibit topics include 19th-century life, historic farming tools, Victorian life, and life in the 1920s-1940s.

Steuben House [NJ]

Description

Built in 1752 by merchant Jan Zabriskie, the Steuben House witnessed the crossing of George Washington and the garrison of Fort Lee across the Hackensack River during their infamous November 1776 retreat. Because of this strategic position on the banks of the river at the New Bridge, the Steuben House survived throughout the American Revolution and was used by both Colonial and British soldiers. The confiscated mansion once served as a military headquarters for General Washington and was later presented to Major General Baron von Steuben as thanks for his efforts during the War for Independence.

Rome Historical Society and Museum [NY]

Description

The Rome Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Oneida County and Rome, NY. To this end, the society operates a museum of local history which covers the Ice Age through present day. Permanent exhibits address Iroquois life, manufacturing, daily life, area canals, forts along the Carry, and the dairy industry.

The society offers exhibits, a multimedia presentation, guided group tours, educational kits, outreach speakers and slide presentations, and archive access. Reservations are required for guided tours. Appointments are recommended for archive use.

Hageman Farm [NJ]

Description

The Hageman House and Farm preserves the 1861 Italianate-Victorian home of two Dutch immigrant families. Although the home dates to 1861, the farm site was in use by these families as of 1756. The grounds also contain a reconstructed horse barn, which replicates the circa 1867 original.

Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site [NY]

Description

The Battle of Oriskany, fought in 1777, was one of the bloodiest battles of the Revolutionary War and a battle that many considered to be a turning point in the war. The battle itself is considered an American victory, primarily because the American forces were able to drive off the Indians supporting the British troops.

The state historic site offers a memorial to the battle, ranger-led programs, and self-guided tours. The website offers visitor information and a brief history of the site.

Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands [NY]

Description

The Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands seeks to preserve and share the history of the Newburgh area, New York. To this end, the society operates the 1830 neoclassical Captain David Crawford House, once home to an major local maritime entrepreneur. The house presents 19th-century upper class life and the histories of Newburgh and the Hudson River Valley. Society collections include furnishings, decorative arts, archival documents, and fine arts. Highlights include 18th-century furnishings, a Duncan Phyfe settee, and Hudson River School paintings.

The society offers tours and research library access. Appointments are required for library access.
