Fairwater Historical Society [WI]

Description

Fairwater was founded in 1847 around the water power of Grand River, and has a colorful 155 year history. The society is focused on maintaining the history of the Fairwater area through several projects. First of all, the society helps to maintain the Fairwater local history site. In addition, the society has worked to preserve the Fairmont Public School Building and William Plocker's 1848 Stagecoach Inn.

The site offers a brief history of the organization as well as access to the Fairmont local history site, which contains a variety of online historical resources, including histories, records, and genealogical information.

A local history museum and restored inn are under development. The above entry is pre-existing.

Union Covered Bridge State Historic Site [MO]

Description

The Union Covered Bridge State Historic Site is located several miles from the historic Mark Twain State Park. The covered bridge was built in 1871, and is one of only four covered bridges that represent the Burr-arch truss design. It served travelers in Monroe County for 99 years, and still stands today as a symbol of a bygone era.

The location simply consists of the bridge and a small plaque explaining the history of the bridge. Visitors to the website can view basic visitor information, along with links to other Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites.

Texas Historical Foundation [TX]

Description

"The mission of the Texas Historical Foundation (THF) is to serve past, present, and future Texans by supporting research in and publication of Texas history, assisting in the preservation of historic and prehistoric artifacts and information,and raising and providing funds for these purposes in order to recognize and honor past generations and to enrich the awareness of and pride in Texas heritage for present and future generations." Since the mid 1980s, the THF has worked towards influencing state legislation in favor of preservation and has served as a vehicle for funding preservation projects state wide.

The site offers general information about the foundation, current and past issues of the foundation's newsletters, information regarding preservation projects, and an events calendar.

Friends of Ohio Barns [OH]

Description

The Friends of Ohio Barns was formed in order to provide "opportunities for barn owners, barn lovers and the folks who believe in the stewardship of Ohio's barns to be connected." In addition, the organization works to help preserve barns and farmsteads throughout the state of Ohio. The organization releases a newsletter several times throughout the year and hosts a variety of events for farm owners and preservationists.

The site offers past issues of the newsletter, an events calendar, and general information about the organization.

Offerings are largely intended for preservation professionals and owners of historic farms.

Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center [NE]

Description

"The Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center is a regional conservation center for the care of cultural materials. It was founded in 1995, as the newest division of the Nebraska State Historical Society." The center is located in Omaha, Nebraska, and houses state of the art laboratories for the examination, evaluation, and specialized conservation treatment of all kinds of historical artifacts. The center is committed to working with local citizens to aid in the preservation of historical artifacts, and to providing resources for preservation professionals.

Court Hill Preservation Association [IA]

Description

The Court Hill Preservation Association is dedicated to preserving the past of the Court Hill district of Ottumwa, Iowa. The association achieves this goal primarily through the promotion of renovation projects. This is especially key because there are many examples of beautiful and historic architecture which are truly worthy of preservation.

The site offers information about current projects, a calendar of events, and general information about the society.

Prairie House Foundation [OK]

Description

"The Prairie House Foundation was incorporated on January 04, 2002 in Duncan, Oklahoma by a concerned citizen, Mrs. Jerry Pat (Gail) Loafman, after she purchased the W. T. Foreman house from the Duncan School System in an attempt to prevent its demise. Mrs. Loafman sold the house to the Prairie House Foundation on May 15, 2002." The foundation's main goal is to renovate and preserve the W.T. Foreman house, a historically and architecturally important structure. To this end, the foundation is currently working on raising funds needed for the renovation.

The site offers photo galleries of the house by year, a news section, and information about the financial state of the foundation.

Cary-Grove Historical Society [IL]

Description

The Cary-Grove Historical Society is located in Cary, IL, and is dedicated to preserving the history of all of McHenry County. The society was founded in 1996 by local residents who were "concerned that the history of this area was not being preserved for future generations," and decided to take it upon themselves to correct this situation. The society is currently focused on finding a permanent site for a museum to exhibit documents, photographs, and objects from the past.

The site offers basic information regarding the society, photographs of recent events and three historical photographs of towns in McHenry County, and information on upcoming events.
