El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park [CA]

Description

This is the site of the oldest building in Santa Barbara and the second oldest in California. Visitors can step back and view this historic site surrounded by modern buildings. El Cuartel, the oldest existing building in Santa Barbara, is all that remains of the last of four Royal Presidios (Spanish military outposts) built in Alta California. The presidio in Santa Barbara was built in 1782. It served as the military and government headquarters for the lands between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo until 1846. Two original buildings have been restored and five others reconstructed. Handmade adobe blocks were used to reconstruct the Padres' Quarters and Presidio Chapel.

Grant Cottage State Historic Site [NY]

Description

It was at this small cottage in the Adirondack Mountains that Ulysses S. Grant died of throat cancer on July 23, 1885. He had finished proofreading his memoirs only four days earlier. "Today, the cottage and its furnishings remain essentially the same as during the Grant family's stay for six weeks in 1885. Guests to the cottage may visit the spacious porch, tour the cottage's four rooms, and view floral arrangements that remain from Grant's August 4th funeral."

Lexington Historical Society [MA]

Description

"The Lexington Historical Society in Lexington, Massachusetts preserves and celebrates Lexington's history, with a special emphasis on the town's important role in the beginning of the American Revolution." The society manages three historic house museums, the Hancock-Clarke House, which was Paul Revere's destination in Lexington during his famous midnight ride, Buckman Tavern, the gathering place for the Lexington Militia on April 19, 1775, and the Munroe Tavern, which served as the temporary British headquarters during the British retreat from Concorde to Boston. All of these locations have been restored so that visitors can experience the locations exactly as they were at the beginning of the American Revolution. In addition to the museums, the society maintains a historical archive and puts on a variety of educational programs.

Friends of Wilderness Battlefield [VA]

Description

The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park is one of the largest battlefields in the United States. There were four major battles fought across the area during the civil war. The Friends of Wilderness Battlefield organization is dedicated to preserving the battlefields and to helping the National Park Service with educational tasks. To this end, the organization has led tours of the battlefield, coordinated bus tours for large groups, and put on a variety of educational events for visitors and children.

The site offers historic information about the battlefields, an events calendar, and a media section which contains all past newsletters released by the organization.

Etowah Valley Historical Society [GA]

Description

"The Etowah Valley Historical Society, Inc. was founded in 1972 by concerned owners of historical properties in Bartow County. From a membership of 24, primarily interested in preserving the Etowah River Valley region of this county, the society has evolved into an organization of over 600 people dedicated to the promotion of historic education and preservation throughout Bartow County." Today, the society is focused on a variety of projects, from operating the Altoona Pass battlefield to helping interested citizens research their genealogy.

The site offers visitor and historical information about the Altoona Pass battlefield, information regarding genealogical research, information on all historical resources owned by the society, several resources available online, information and resources for preservation, and an events calendar.

Fort Tejon State Historic Park [CA]

Description

Fort Tejon is located in the Grapevine Canyon, the main route between California's great central valley and Southern California. The fort was established to protect and control the Indians who were living on the Sebastian Indian Reservation, and to protect both the Indians and white settlers from raids by the Paiutes, Chemeheui, Mojave, and other Indian groups of the desert regions to the southeast. Fort Tejon was first garrisoned by the United States Army on August 10, 1854 and was abandoned ten years later on September 11, 1864. There are restored adobes from the original fort, and the park's museum features exhibits on army life and local history.

The park offers exhibits, tours, educational programs, living history events, and other recreational and educational events.

Fort Jesup State Historic Site [LA]

Description

Fort Jesup, located in western Louisiana, was constructed in the early 19th century in order to provide protection on the western edge of the United States. Throughout its military life, the fort presided over the furthest western reaches of the United States of America, which terminated at the Sabine river, which forms the modern-day border between Texas and Louisiana. In addition to providing protection, the garrison provided many other crucial functions, such as road construction, surveying, and treaty negotiation. The fort was designated a national historic landmark in 1961.

Fort Connah [MT]

Description

"The site of Fort Connah is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Fort Connah was a Hudson's Bay Trading Post established in 1846. One of the three original buildings still remains and is believed to be the oldest standing building in Montana. It was active from 1846 to 1871. " A visitor center and museum is planned for the site.

Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation and Aviation Museum [CA]

Description

The Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation was founded in 1999, and has a mission to support the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar Command Museum. The Foundation does this mainly by providing volunteers and additional funding to support limited Department of Defense funding. The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum is one of only four certified Marine Corps Command Museums, and is the only museum in the world dedicated to preserving the history of the U.S. Marine Corps aviation. The museum boasts a collection of over 40 vintage aircraft, an extensive research library, photos, video, and valuable memorabilia and artifacts.
