Boothbay Railway Village [ME]

Description

The Boothbay Railway Village operates a narrow-gauge coal-fired steam train in a recreated historic village composed of locally significant historic structures. Additionally the museum exhibits one of the finest presentations of antique vehicles in New England.

The village offers exhibits, train rides, educational programs, and occasional recreational and educational events.

Century House Historical Society and the Snyder Estate [NY]

Description

The Century House Historical Society preserves the industrial history of the Rosendale natural cement region, operating from the Snyder Estate. The estate began in the early 1800s as a family farm. With the local discovery of natural cement, the site experienced substantial industrial growth until the 1970s.

The society and the estate offer exhibits, tours, and occasional educational and recreational events.

Armstrong Air and Space Museum [OH]

Description

Named in honor of Neil Armstrong, first person to set foot on the moon, this museum chronicles the history of spaceflight and Ohio's contributions to such endeavors. Among the items on display are a F5D Sky Lancer, the Gemini VIII spacecraft, Apollo 11 artifacts and a moon rock. In the museum's Astro-theater, multimedia presentations of the sights and sounds of space unfold against a starry background.

The museum offers exhibits, tours, and multimedia presentations for museum visitors. The museum also offers a variety of academic content standards-based educational programming. The programming is available for school groups, community organizations, and scout troops. Available after school during monthly sessions is the Young Astronaut Program designed for young children in grades 2-7 curious about space exploration and travel. Pacific Coast Air Museum

Description

Founded in 1989, the Pacific Coast Air Museum (PCAM) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the acquisition, restoration, safe operation and display of historical aircraft and provides an educational venue for students and the community. The Pacific Coast Air Museum also focuses on honoring aviators, past and present, who have contributed to the defense of our way of life.

The site offers exhibit previews, shopping, and information about events and airshows at the museum.

Arthurdale Heritage and New Deal Homestead Museum [WV]

Description

Visitors to Arthurdale, WV can revisit the 1930s. Established in 1933, by the United States government, Arthurdale is the nation's first New Deal Homestead Community. Created through President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal legislation, the community provided a new chance at life for residents of West Virginia who were suffering from the Great Depression. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt served as the empathetic force behind the community, which became known as "Eleanor’s Little Village" because of her interest. Today, Arthurdale is a National Historic District that features 160 of the 165 original homesteads. The New Deal Homestead Museum is a multi-building museum comprised of a forge filled with original tools, a service station reminiscent of a bygone era, the historic Center Hall, the original federal government administration building, and a fully restored Arthurdale homestead.

The museum offers exhibits, tours, and occasional recreational and educational events.

Austerlitz Historical Society and Old Austerlitz Historical Village [NY]

Description

The Society operates the Old Austerlitz Historical Village where artifacts, photos, and memorabilia relating to the town are displayed in a collection of 18th and 19th century buildings. These buildings include an 1818 one-room schoolhouse, an 1850s church, a blacksmith's, the 1770 Sauers-Kellogg House, a granary, the Morey-Deveraux House, and the 1830s Varney House.

The society offers occasional recreational and educational events; the village offers tours.

Ontario County Historical Society

Description

The Ontario County Historical Society is dedicated to the preservation of the history of Ontario County, the original political entity that now encompasses all of western New York state. The society operates the Ontario County Historical Museum, located on Main Street Canandaigua. In addition to three exhibit galleries, the museum also holds the society archives and library.

Historic Georgetown, Inc.

Description

Historic Georgetown, a Colorado non-profit corporation, was created to initiate, encourage and integrate efforts to preserve the rich heritage of the Georgetown/Silver Plume National Historic Landmark District. Historic Georgetown Inc. is dedicated to preserving five different 19th century homes in order to give visitors a glimpse at what early life was like in Georgetown, from the poor to the rich.

The site offers virtual tours of all five faithfully restored homes, as well as information about Historic Georgetown Inc. and its upcoming events.

National Railroad Museum

Description

The National Railroad Museum, built in 1958, strives to introduce visitors to a chapter in American history that bought wealth and modernity to millions of Americans. The Museum looks beyond the simple technical history of rail to the cultural and economic changes it brought to America.

Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission

Description

The PHMC is the official history agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Created in 1945, the PHMC is responsible for the collection, conservation, and interpretation of Pennsylvania's historic heritage, which is accomplished through the Pennsylvania State Archives, the State Museum of Pennsylvania, the Bureau of Historic Sites and Museums, the Pennsylvania Trails of History, the Bureau for Historic Preservation, and the Bureau of Management Services.

The site offers a wealth of information for researches, including library access, geneology records, land records, and databases of historical landmarks and such.
