Carlyle House Historic Park [VA]

Description

"The historic Carlyle House," according to its website, "was completed in 1753 by Scottish merchant John Carlyle for his bride, Sarah Fairfax of Belvoir, member of one of the most prestigious families in colonial Virginia. Their home quickly became a center of social and political life in Alexandria and gained a foothold in history when British General Braddock made the mansion his headquarters in 1755." Today, the house has been restored to its pre-Revolutionary War state, and offers visitors a glimpse into the life of the colonial upper classes.

Ximenez-Fatio House [FL]

Description

The Ximenez-Fatio House is one of St. Augustine's "most authentic historic properties." The house is the best preserved of roughly three dozen colonial buildings in St. Augustine. The grounds and buildings that compose the home date all the way back to St. Augustine's original town plan of 1572. Visitors to the home will be taken on a trip starting in the late 18th century when the house was built all the way through Florida's acquisition as a U.S. state in 1845. The house museum focuses on the property's role as a boarding house, one of the few socially acceptable business ventures for a 19th-century woman.

The house offers exhibits and guided tours for school groups, as well as a DVD presentation on Florida's territorial-era history, Florida: The 27th Star, for order. Friends of Wilderness Battlefield [VA]

Description

The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park is one of the largest battlefields in the United States. There were four major battles fought across the area during the civil war. The Friends of Wilderness Battlefield organization is dedicated to preserving the battlefields and to helping the National Park Service with educational tasks. To this end, the organization has led tours of the battlefield, coordinated bus tours for large groups, and put on a variety of educational events for visitors and children.

Etowah Valley Historical Society [GA]

Description

"The Etowah Valley Historical Society, Inc. was founded in 1972 by concerned owners of historical properties in Bartow County. From a membership of 24, primarily interested in preserving the Etowah River Valley region of this county, the society has evolved into an organization of over 600 people dedicated to the promotion of historic education and preservation throughout Bartow County." Today, the society is focused on a variety of projects, from operating the Altoona Pass battlefield to helping interested citizens research their genealogy.

Southeastern Railway Museum [GA]

Description

"The Southeastern Railway Museum (SRM) occupies a 34-acre site in Duluth, Georgia, in northeast suburban Atlanta. In operation since 1970, SRM features about 90 items of rolling stock including historic Pullman cars and classic steam locomotives." All exhibits are restored railroad cars and locomotives, ranging from the private car of President Harding to the diesel-electric locomotive that powered the Crescent train before Amtrak assumed control of the train.

Louisiana State Fire Museum [LA]

Description

The Louisiana State Fire Museum is housed in the David Crocket Fire Hall. Built in 1859, the fire hall is the home of the David Crockett Volunteer Fire Company which was organized in 1841 and today is the oldest continually operating volunteer fire company in the United States. The museum has two floors of exhibits which showcase items of historical valley to the David Crockett Fire Company and the history of firefighting.

Eustis Historical Museum & Preservation Society [FL]

Description

The Eustis Historical Society is dedicated towards preserving and showcasing Eustis area history through the Eustis Historical Museum. The museum is located in the Clifford House, which was built in 1911, and remains much the same today as it was when it was first built. Exhibits in the museum mainly focus on the early history of Eustis, Florida, which was dominated by the citrus industry. In addition, visitors can view photographs of early residents of Eustis.

Fort Jesup State Historic Site [LA]

Description

Fort Jesup, located in western Louisiana, was constructed in the early 19th century in order to provide protection on the western edge of the United States. Throughout its military life, the fort presided over the furthest western reaches of the United States of America, which terminated at the Sabine river, which forms the modern-day border between Texas and Louisiana. In addition to providing protection, the garrison provided many other crucial functions, such as road construction, surveying, and treaty negotiation. The fort was designated a national historic landmark in 1961.

Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society [VA]

Description

Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society is home to a variety of resources for visitors. First, the society owns and operates a museum, which has exhibits on local history as well as an electronic map that gives visitors a strategic overview of General Stonewall Jackson's famous Shenendoah Valley campaign of 1862. Founded in 1983, Chicora is a heritage preservation organization located in Columbia, South Carolina. Chicora focuses on archaeological and historical research throughout the Southeastern United States, public education in South Carolina, and work in conservation and preservation with museums, libraries, historic organizations, historic libraries, and private citizens. Chicora also creates a wide variety of publications, including publications of archaeological research, and preservation guides.
