Fort Dobbs [NC]

Description

Named for royal governor Arthur Dobbs, the fort was built during the French and Indian War to protect settlers. In 1760, a raiding party of Cherokee Indians were repelled during the only direct attack attempted against the fort. Historians believe it was dismantled after pioneers pushed further west. Fort Dobbs is the only North Carolina state historic site associated with the French and Indian War and the only one located along the official colonial frontier.

Wichita County Heritage Society and Kell House Museum [TX]

Description

The Wichita County Heritage Society preserves and presents the history of Wichita County. The Society operates the Kell House Museum, a restored 1909 neo-classical home, that, according to the Society's website, "features distinctive architecture, original family furnishings, textiles, decorative arts, and historic costumes."

Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum [GA]

Description

The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is the country's largest state sports museum and has been in operation since 1956. The building itself resembles a turn of the century ballpark. Inside, visitors can experience the history of sports in Georgia with over 14,000 feet of exhibits space and the Hall of Fame Corridor which honors over 300 inductees. The Museum also houses a gift shop and research library.

Falling Waters Battlefield Association [WV]

Description

The Falling Waters Battlefield Association was founded with three key objectives: to preserve the land upon which the battle was fought; to construct new buildings to serve as a visitor museum, not yet completed; and to work to educate the public using publications, living history demonstrations, and tours. The July second, 1861, Battle of Falling Waters was the first Civil War battle fought in the Shenandoah Valley; and assisted in the Confederate victory at the Battle of Bull Run.

Fort Fisher [NC]

Description

Until the last few months of the Civil War, Fort Fisher kept North Carolina's port of Wilmington open to blockade-runners supplying necessary goods to Confederate armies inland. By 1865, the supply line through Wilmington was the last remaining supply route open to Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. When Fort Fisher fell after a massive Federal amphibious assault on January 15, 1865, its defeat helped seal the fate of the Confederacy.

Historic Prince William [VA]

Description

Historic Prince William is a non-profit organization dedicated to "disseminating historical information through programs and publications, promoting historical preservation and protection of County resources through public education, and broadening the base of public interest in local history by sponsoring tours, speaking in schools, supporting research, and printing material of historical interest." The organization works tirelessly to preserve historic structures in Prince William County as well as help support national treasures like Manassas Battlefield.

National Council for the Social Studies [MD]

Description

"The mission of National Council for the Social Studies is to provide leadership, service, and support for all social studies educators." The council is currently the largest association in the country devoted solely to social studies education; and works to establish a successful baseline curriculum for social studies education, to promote effective use of technology in the classroom, and to aid the passage of effective legislation favoring social studies curriculum. The National Council for the Social Studies does this by working with educators and legislators across the country.

The council offers summer educator workshops. Booker T. Washington National Monument [VA]

Description

The Booker T. Washington National Monument is located just outside of Roanoke, VA, and consists of the cabin and surrounding grounds where Booker T. Washington was born. Washington's achievements, including founding the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial School and his various literary works belie his inauspicious birth as a slave in southwestern Virginia. Visitors to the monument can enjoy a variety of exhibits documenting the life and times of Washington, as well as view first-hand the life of a slave.

President James K. Polk State Historic Site [NC]

Description

Located on land once owned by President James K. Polk's family, this historic site is where the 11th president grew up. Here he spent spent most of his childhood, helping work the 250-acre farm. The site recalls significant events in the Polk administration including the Mexican War, settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute, and the annexation of California. Reconstructions of typical homestead buildings—a log house, separate kitchen, and barn—are authentically furnished.

Sarasota Classic Car Museum [FL]

Description

One of the oldest car museums in the world, according to its website, the Sarasota Classic Car Museum holds over 100 automobiles, including makes from almost every manufacturer to compete in the United States car market, spanning over 100 years. In addition to vehicles, the museum houses a small arcade of antique games.
