Henry Morrison Flagler Museum [FL]

Description

The Henry Morrison Flagler Museum preserves Whitehall, the estate of Henry Flagler, the noted railroad baron. The museum both chronicles the life and times of Flagler and the Florida East Coast Railway and serves as a local art museum.

The museum offers exhibits, tours, educational programs, and recreational and educational events.

Rankin House [GA]

Description

In 1968, the Rankin House at 1440 Second Avenue was donated to the Historic Columbus Foundation in memory of James Waldo Woodruff, Sr., a visionary community leader. Fully restored, its first floor is an 1850-1870 house museum and Research Library. On the second floor are the main offices of Historic Columbus Foundation, Inc. The Rankin House was built during the Civil War for James Rankin, a notable planter and owner of the Rankin Hotel. The home is notable for its beautiful Victorian architecture.

Jefferson Davis State Historic Site [KY]

Description

The Jefferson Davis State Historic Site marks the 1808 birthplace of the famous statesman, Jefferson Davis. Davis is most well known for serving as the first and only president of the Confederacy during the Civil War. The state historic site features a 351 foot tall monument to Davis as well as a visitor center, which features exhibits detailing Davis's political life before and after the Civil War, as well as historical artifacts and books regarding Kentucky and the Civil War.

The site offers an introductory film, exhibits, and a guided elevator tour. The website offers information regarding educational activities, specifically tours and field trips, visitor information, and very brief historical information about the life and times of Jefferson Davis.

Homewood House Museum [MD]

Description

Charles Carroll Jr. spared no expense and overlooked no detail in the construction of Homewood, an expression of his family's tremendous political, social, and financial stature. Homewood Museum offers individual and group tours and a year-round calendar of changing exhibitions, concerts, and educational programs."

Barnacle Historic State Park [FL]

Description

The Barnacle, built in 1891, offers a glimpse of Old Florida during the Era of the Bay. Situated on the shore of Biscayne Bay, this was the home of Ralph Middleton Munroe, one of Coconut Grove's most charming and influential pioneers. Munroe's principal passion was designing yachts. In his lifetime, he drew plans for 56 different boats. As a seaman, civic activist, naturalist, and photographer, Commodore Munroe was a man who cherished the natural world around him.

The park offers exhibits, tours, and educational and recreational events.

Tampa Bay History Center [FL]

Description

The Tampa Bay History Center is located in the center of historic Tampa, FL, in a beautiful new building which contains 60,000 square feet of exhibits space. The building hosts numerous exhibits which depict almost 500 years of recorded history and 12,000 years of human habitation in this region of Florida. The center also hosts a research center which contains 9,638 books, manuscripts, microfilm, legal documents. In addition, the research center hosts over 1,000 genealogical resources.

The site offers visitor information, a listing of all current, past, and present exhibits, information regarding the other historical resources owned by the center, an education section complete with lesson plans, field trip guides, and interactive online educational activities, a museum store, and an events calendar.

Montgomery Preservation [MD]

Description

"Montgomery Preservation [...], Montgomery County's only county-wide, private, nonprofit historic preservation organization, was originally composed of a small group of local residents who formed the Montgomery County Committee of the Maryland Historical Trust in the early 1970's to further preservation efforts in the county." Today, the organization works to preserve local history on two fronts. First, the organization runs the mid-20th-century Silver Spring B&O Railroad Station, which is open to the public once a month during the summer and fall months. Second, the organization works toward encouraging preservation among local individuals and organizations.

Western North Carolina Historical Association and Smith-McDowell House Museum [NC]

Description

The Smith-McDowell House is located south of Asheville, NC, and is notable for its unusual brick construction. The house is a classic circa 1840 plantation home, and was most likely built using slave labor. Today, the house is on the National Register of Historic Places, and serves as both a museum of Western North Carolina and a historic house museum.

The site offers historical information about the house, visitor information, a listing of current and past exhibits, an online store, an events calendar, and educational resources including tour information and lesson plans. Visitors to the site should note that the website appears to be under construction, and some of the features, such as the store and educational information, are not currently working.

Wise County Historical Society [VA]

Description

The Wise County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history and genealogy of Southwestern Virginia and the Appalachian Mountains. The society maintains an archive in the Wise County Courthouse. The archive is home to the National Melungeon Registry, which is the only organization in the nation dedicated to the genealogy of the Melungeon people, as well as the Southern Appalachian Ancestral Registry and the Appalachian Quarterly, the society's quarterly newsletter.

The site offers general information about the Melungeon Registry, the Southern Appalachian Ancestral Registry, and the Appalachian Quarterly. In addition, the site offers present and past issues of the Appalachian Quarterly for download.

Fort George Island Cultural State Park [FL]

Description

Native Americans feasted here, colonists built a fort, and the Smart Set of the 1920s came for vacations. A site of human occupation for over 5,000 years, Fort George Island was named for a 1736 fort built to defend the southern flank of Georgia when it was a colony. A key attraction is the recently restored Ribault Club. Once an exclusive resort, it is now a visitor center.

The park offers exhibits, tours, educational programs, and occasional recreational and educational events.
