Dallas Firefighters Museum [TX]

Description

The Dallas Firefighters Museum, housed within a 1907 station, presents firefighting history via a collection of firefighting apparatus and memorabilia. Collection highlights include "Old Tige," an 1884 horse-drawn steam pumper, and a 1951 fire engine which visitors are welcome to climb aboard.

John Brown Farm State Historic Site [NY]

Description

The John Brown State Historic Site is comprised of John Brown's home and grave. Brown (1800-1859) advocated abolition through armed resistance. He is best known for the 1859 raid at Harper's Ferry, although he also led the 1856 Pottawatomie Massacre.

The site offers guided tours and reenactments, as well as a variety of outdoors activities, including hiking and cross-country skiing. The site only offers basic visitor and historic information.

Delaware Archaeology Museum [DE]

Description

The Delaware Archaeology Museum is located in Dover, Delaware, and highlights more than 11,000 years of human habitation in the state of Delaware from the original Native American residents to the present day. The museum offers group tours, which are available by appointment, as well as a variety of special events and presentations, including an interactive archaeological excavation. The museum is housed in the historic Old Presbyterain Church of Dover.

Staunton River Battlefield State Park [VA]

Description

At this historic site, a ragtag group of Confederate old men and young boys beat the odds and held off an assault by 5,000 Union cavalry soldiers on a bridge of strategic importance to General Lee’s army, then under siege in Petersburg.

The park offers visitors a visitor and gift shop, along with an environmental education center, and a variety of outdoors activities. The site offers basic visitor information, along with links to nearby attractions, a calendar of events, and a very brief history of the park.

Wrightsville Beach Museum of History [NC]

Description

"Visitors to the cottage will find a scale model of Wrightsville Beach circa 1910, exhibits featuring the early days of the beach including Lumina Pavilion, our hurricane history and information about the interaction between the people and our natural environment which have shaped the 100 year history of Wrightsville Beach." The museum is a historic house museum, and visitors can view the restored cottage and its rooms as they appeared in the early 1900s.

Dudley Farm Historic State Park [FL]

Description

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this park demonstrates the evolution of Florida farming from the 1850s to the mid-1940s—through three generations of the Dudley family. An authentic working farm, the homestead consists of 18 buildings, including the family farmhouse with original furnishings, an 1880s kitchen outbuilding, a general store and post office, and a functional cane syrup complex. Park staff in period clothing perform daily chores—raising crops and tending to livestock. The farm features seasonal cane grindings, corn shuckings, and heritage varieties of livestock and plants.

The park offers demonstrations, exhibits, tours, educational programs, and occasional recreational and educational events.

Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum [TX]

Description

Visitors to this local history museum can view area history exhibits and tour the circa 1896 courthouse. The museum also houses a small research library, containing photographs of early Denton and a microfilm collection of Denton area newspapers.

Description

The Center works to revitalize the historic neighborhoods of New Orleans, and now aids in the reconstruction of New Orleans in a historically conscious way.

The center offers an educational program. The website offers information on the center's current projects, a resource center containing resources for homeowners and prospective preservationists, and information on and photographs of the neighborhoods that have been revitalized by the center.

Old Fort Jackson [GA]

Description

"Fort James Jackson, also known as Old Fort Jackson, has been a part of Coastal Georgia’s history for nearly two centuries. Named in honor of Georgia governor and Revolutionary War soldier James Jackson, the fort is the oldest standing brick fortification in the state." The Fort served as the headquarters for the Savannah River Defenses during the Civil War, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, visitors can tour the fully restored fortifications. The fort is also notable for its tradition of giving daily cannon firing demonstrations.

Knott House Museum [FL]

Description

The Knott House Museum was first built in the early 1800s, and opened as a museum in 1992. Today, visitors to the museum will take a step back in time as they enter the house, as the house is furnished in its original, Victorian-era furniture. Upstairs, visitors are treated to two exhibits on the history of Tallahassee and the Knott family's special role in that history.
