The museum is located in the 1867 Philomath College building, an important local historic landmark that was kept standing by the advocacy of local citizens.

Description

The National Cowboys of Color Museum and Hall of Fame highlights the men of color who helped expand our country through exhibits containing art, photography, artifacts, journals, and other historic items.

The museum offers free children's cultural heritage workshops twice a week which include tours of the museum and guest speakers. Interactive student activities are also offered.

Historic St. Mary’s Mission [MT]

Description

Historic St. Mary's Mission is located in the Bitterroot Valley under the shadow of St. Mary's Peak, which rises over 4,000 feet from the valley floor. The mission dates from the early 1840s, and was created by three Jesuit Missionaries for the purpose of enlightening the local American Indian population.

Travelers' Rest Historic Site [MT]

Description

The Lewis and Clark expedition camped here twice during their historic journey to locate the elusive Northwest Passage in 1805 and 1806. For countless generations before that Indian people used this area as a camping crossroad.

Mt. Hood Cultural Center and Museum [OR]

Description

The Mt. Hood Cultural Center and Museum presents the history of Mt. Hood, an active volcano. Exhibits address Mt. Hood's natural history, as well as that of skiing, exploring, and the forest service on Mt. Hood. The center also devotes space to an exhibit of fine arts. Collections include sporting equipment and clothing, as well as artifacts related to natural history, the forest service, local history, and Barlow Road.

The center offers exhibits. During June through August the center also offers talks and daily guided walks.

Historic Fort Steilacoom [WA]

Description

Fort Steilacoom (active 1849-1868) actively protected the Pacific Northwest, promoting migration to Washington state. The fort's military history primarily involved disputes with local Native American populations; although twice the majority of the fort's men were re-deployed, once for the San Juan Island "Pig War, a boundary dispute, and again for active involvement in the Civil War.

The Historical Society of Idaho Springs [CO]

Description

The Historical Society of Idaho Springs is dedicated to preserving the historic heritage of Idaho Springs, Colorado, one of the first mountain communities west of Denver on I-70. The town is also well known for being where the gold rush of 1859 began. The society runs the Heritage Museum, a local history museum, the Underhill Museum, which is a historic house museum, and provides walking tours of the community.

The society also offers exhibits in both of its museums as well as guided tours and special events. Flavel House Museum [OR]

Description

The Flavel House is located in Astoria, Oregon, and is one of the best preserved examples of Queen Anne architecture in the Northwest. The house was built in 1885 for Captain George Flavel and his family. Captain Flavel had made his fortune through real estate investments and his job as a river bar pilot. Today, the Flavel House serves as a historic house museum, and is furnished to accurately portray the elegance of the Victorian period and the history of the Flavel family.
