The Battle of Stones River began on the last day of 1862 and was one of the bloodiest conflicts of the Civil War. The battle produced important military and political gains for the Union, and it changed forever the people who lived and fought here.

The battlefield offers exhibits, films, tours, living history demonstrations, and other educational and recreational programs and events.

The USS Arizona Memorial is the final resting place for many of the battleship's 1,177 crew members who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. The Memorial commemorates the site where World War II began for the United States. Visitors experience history through the national memorial's program tour, museum, and wayside exhibits.

The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the most famous 19th-century African American. Adams National Historical Park tells the story of four generations of the Adams family (from 1720 to 1927). The park has two main sites: the Birthplaces of 2nd U.S. President John Adams and 6th U.S. President John Quincy Adams, and Peacefield including the “Old House,” home to four generations of the Adams family, and the Stone Library which contains more than 14,000 historic volumes.

It was in Saratoga that in 1777 American forces forced a major British army to surrender. The victory secured foreign recognition and support that enabled the American forces to win the war. In addition to the battlefield, the park is host to the Schuyler House, the home of American General Philip Schuyler, and the Saratoga Monument, a 155-foot obelisk commentating the Battle of Saratoga.

Yorktown Battlefield is notable for being the location of the British surrender during the Revolutionary War. The park hosts a variety of special events throughout the year commemorating the battle, as well as tours of the battlefield and town. Colonial Williamsburg and historic Jamestown are also located only minutes away from Yorktown.

The park offers ranger-led tours, as well as a variety of programs including the Young Soldiers Program, where kids join a costumed interpreter to learn about life as a soldier, and artillery demonstrations. "The Atlanta Preservation Center is the agency for coordination, knowledge, research and advocacy for preservation in the city." The center was founded in 1980, and since has worked with the government, business, and community leaders to preserve over 175 residential and commercial buildings, neighborhoods, and park spaces. Currently, the center is focused on preserving the historic structures on the Beltline, a 22-mile loop of public parks, trails, and transportation. In addition, the center offers regularly scheduled walking tours and popular classroom programs on architecture and community planning.

The Park includes the Peirce Barn and Mill and Old Stone House. Peirce Barn and Mill were built in the 1820s, and operated commercially until 1897. The U.S. Government acquired the mill as part of Rock Creek Park in 1892. The Old Stone House, one of the oldest known structures remaining in the nation's capital, is a simple 18th-century dwelling built and inhabited by common people.

Eisenhower National Historic Site is the home and farm of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Located adjacent to the Gettysburg Battlefield, the farm served the President as a weekend retreat and a meeting place for world leaders. The site comprises 690 acres and includes four farms, three of which were used by President Eisenhower for his show herd of black Angus cattle. Today the farm is maintained as it was during the Eisenhower years and the President's home retains nearly all its original furnishings.
