In this workshop, teachers will learn about the stories of civilians and soldiers during the Union occupation of Murfreesboro. This workshop will feature special living history programs at Fortress Rosecrans, the fortification built by the Union army after the Battle of Stones River.

In this workshop, teachers will get a chance to watch children participate in educational activities based on Stones River National Battlefield's curriculum-based lesson plans. Educators will also learn about the National Park Service's Junior Ranger and Web Ranger programs so that they can encourage their students to explore and learn from Stones River National Battlefield and other national parks on their own.

Facing History is excited to present its first community event in Chattanooga featuring author and concert pianist Mona Golabek. Golabek is an internationally acclaimed concert pianist, the host of a syndicated classical music radio show, and the author of The Children of Willesden Lane, the story of her mother's rescue from Nazi-occupied Austria on a Kindertransport and her teenage years as a refugee. Through a powerful musical and narrative performance, Ms. Golabek will relate her family history and address Facing History themes of identity, participation, courage, and resilience.

This workshop is specially crafted for the needs of Memphis City Schools' middle school exploratory teachers. It will focus on Facing History content and teaching strategies which are developmentally appropriate for the sixth–eight grade student. Time will be provided for experienced Facing History teachers to work with novice ones to share successes and challenges in using the program at the middle-school level.

Bill Moyers's documentary, Becoming American: The Chinese Experience, explores the challenges faced by Chinese Americans from the 1800s to the present and raises questions about the tensions between race, democracy, and citizenship. Participants view excerpts and explore parallels between the Chinese experience and those of other newcomers to the U.S.—what it means to "become American" today.

How do societies integrate newcomers? In this workshop, participants will engage with stories of Muslim immigration to Europe and make connections to debates about difference in their own community. Among the many topics they will examine is the role of religion in public life. This workshop is specifically designed for high school teachers who are teaching the Facing History and Ourselves Semester Elective. In this one-day workshop, teachers will unite with other elective teachers to share best practices, discuss challenges, and celebrate triumphs. The agenda is designed to address both content and pedagogy.

This workshop will "dig into the controversies and turbulence of Andrew Jackson, his times, and his reputation," focusing on the topics "Growing Democracy," "Cotton Economy and Slavery," "Indians and Westward Expansion," "Reform and Religion," "Women's Lives in a Changing America," and "Developing a Distinct American Material Culture." The workshop will include visits to historical sites, readings, curriculum planning, pedagogical sessions, lectures, and discussion.
