The Society operates the Prairie Trails Museum. The large main brick building of the Museum houses 25,000 artifacts in five galleries covering over 21,000 square feet and the range of the area's history. The red Heritage Barn contains an extensive collection of early farm artifacts displayed in interpretive exhibits.

The museum complex includes the Kitchin House, the Male Academy/Parsonage, Woodsdale General Store, Dr. John H. Merritt's office, a tobacco barn, and the Van Hook Subscription School, which is believed to be the oldest in the state. Variety is the emphasis of the museum with something for everyone from sports fans to doll lovers. The Enos Slaughter display honoring the Roxboro native and Hall of Famer features a replica of a statue depicting his winning slide in the 1946 World Series while the Victorian Wedding Room showcases a wedding party of dolls in full wedding garb. Other exhibits focus on Black history; Native Americans; the Titanic; and the military, with uniforms from all branches of the service in all the wars from the American Revolution to Vietnam. Displays are updated often and special commemorative events including historical reenactments are held throughout the year.

The Museum and the Village, with its buildings and their contents, reflect life in Jefferson County from the mid-19th century to more recent years. Among the furnished buildings one finds homes of the 19th century, a one-room school, a log church and log jail, operating blacksmith and print shops, merchandise in the general store, and a variety of medical equipment from a foot-treadle dentist's drill to a Civil War amputation kit in the Medical Building. The Museum currently houses exhibits of the history of telephones and weaving and of military personnel and their lives from the Civil War to the current armed forces, as well as collections donated by Jefferson County residents.

The Jefferson County Historical Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and passing on the history and culture of Jefferson County, NE. It operates a number of historical sites, including historic Steele City, where visitors can see a working blacksmith shop, a livery barn, a school, a turn-of-the-century bank, and an 1880s stone church as well as an antique farm machinery display; the 1869 District 10 School; the 1872 W.C. Smith House and Lime Kiln, which features exhibits explaining the lime industry, as well as period furniture; the Rock Island Depot Railroad Museum, which displays rail history exhibits; and the 1883 Diller Bank Building Museum, which displays artifacts from the history of Diller, NE.

The Society was chartered by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1968 for the stated purpose of collecting and preserving the history of Franklin County, VA. To that end, it offers memberships to the general public to encourage interest in local history. It also operates a history museum and research library to provide public access to collected materials.

The Society operates a museum in the historic Paddock Mansion in downtown Watertown, New York. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, the mansion was formerly the home of local banker Edwin L. Paddock and his wife, Olive. The home was designed in the Eastlake tradition by architect John Hose, and combined Tuscan Villa elements "for him" and Swiss Chalet "for her." It was built between 1876 and 1878 by John Griffin. Mrs. Olive Paddock bequeathed the home to the Society in 1922, and it was opened as a museum in 1924. The museum contains both Paddock family and local history exhibits, spread throughout three floors and within three outbuildings.
