Carver County Historical Society and Museum

Description

Established in 1940, the Society is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Carver County. Located across from Bayview Elementary School in Waconia, the Society's museum was expanded in 1998 to better serve the public. The museum houses five local history exhibits, a veterans' exhibit, and a local history and genealogy library.

The Carver County Historical Society offers a one room schoolhouse program, eco-history programs, and specific programs for each grade, such as ‘Marching Barefoot’, for the 6th grade Civil War program, and ‘Down on the Farm’, for the 2nd grade farm and pioneer life and animal program. They also offer day and summer camps, and quarterly family day trips.

Jefferson County Historical Society, Museum, and Rothschild House [WA]

Description

The Society maintains a Museum and the Rothschild House. The Museum, housed in the restored 1892 Port Townsend City Hall building's former municipal court room, fire hall and jail spaces, presents exhibits illustrating the lively history of local communities born in waterfront forests over 150 years ago. The 1868 Rothschild House invites visitors to step back to the 1800s; it is virtually unchanged from a hundred years ago.

The society offers research library access, tours, educational programs, lectures, and occasional recreational and educational events; the museum offers exhibits; the house offers exhibits and tours.

Tippecanoe County Historical Association and Historical Sites

Description

The Association operates several historical sites in the county. The Tippecanoe County Historical Museum is housed in the Gothic Revival home built by Moses Fowler in 1851–1852; Fort Ouiatenon recreates an early French trading post blockhouse (1717–1791); and the Tippecanoe Battlefield memorializes the 1812 battle between Indiana Territories and Shawnee forces.

The society offers research library access, occasional living history events, and educational and recreational programs; the museums offers exhibits; the fort offers occasional living history events, exhibits, and tours; the battlefield offers exhibits and tours.

Presque Isle County Historical Society and Museum [Michigan]

Description

The Society operates a museum, housed in the Bradley House—an early-20th-century, seven-bedroom, two-story, single-family bungalow built in 1914. This house was the home of the president of Michigan Limestone and Chemical Company, the largest industry in this community. The museum features three floors of exhibits, including the Bradley dining room, a Victorian music room, a 1900s bedroom, the Bertram sisters' millinery shop, and a county store. Other exhibits include a school room from the early 1900s, farm implements, household goods, woodworking and lumbering tools, and a maritime room.

The museum offers exhibits, tours, and occasional educational and recreational programs.

Douglas County Historical Society and Watkins Community Museum of History [Kansas]

Description

The Douglas County Historical Society is responsible for the operation, preservation, and development of collections in the Watkins Community Museum of History. The Museum is housed in a building that was once the Land Mortgage Company and Watkins National Bank, constructed between 1885 and 1888; it displays exhibits on early settlement, toys, sports, and other local history topics.

The museum offers exhibits, tours, workshops, and educational and recreational events.

Columbia County Historical Society, Museum, and Historic Houses [New York]

Description

The Society is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the history of Columbia County, NY. The Society owns and operates three historic properties, open to the public during the summer season, and a museum, open year-round. The Columbia County Museum, open to the public since 1985, was originally built as a Masonic Temple in 1916. Today it houses the Society offices, research library, collections storage, and exhibit space. Volunteers and staff organize educational programs and aid in genealogical research as well as many other activities. The Society also operates the 1820s James Vanderpoel House and the 1737 Luykas Van Alen House.

The museums offer exhibits, tours, and research library access; the society offers lectures and educational and recreational programs.

Lake County Historical Society and Historic Sites [MN]

Description

Organized in 1925, the mission of the Lake County Historical Society is to preserve the history of Lake County, MN, through the preservation, study and interpretation of artifacts, documents, photographs, and historic sites. The Society also maintains several historic sites. The Two Harbors Light Station constructed in 1892 is the oldest operating light station in Minnesota and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The lighthouse museum explores the development of Agate Bay. The 3M Museum includes the original office and headquarters of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M). It was here, in 1902, that five businessmen embarked on a mining venture which laid the foundation for a successful global corporation. Exhibits include Attorney John Dwan's recreated office; a history of the company including photos, artifacts, and documents; a "lab" area representing research and development, product diversification, and growth; and a "hands on" interactive program of technology applications. The Depot Museum is in the 1907 headquarters of the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad, and highlights the early pioneering history of Lake County. Exhibits range from McDougal archaeological dig artifacts and a Paleo-Indian display to the first shipment of iron ore from Minnesota.

The Two Harbors Light Station offers exhibits and tours; the 3M Museum offers exhibits; and the Depot Museum offers short films and exhibits.
