The Society operates two museums: the Warden's House Museum and the Hay Lake School and Erikson Log House Museum. The Warden's House Museum was built in 1853 as the residence of the Minnesota Territorial Prison warden. The museum consists of 14 rooms decorated in the late 19th- and early 20th-century style. Many rooms are like those of an upper-middle-class household while other rooms depict certain historic themes of Washington County, including a room dedicated to the lumbering industry and another that shows off items that children's artifacts from 100 years ago. The Hay Lake School was constructed in 1896 and in use until 1963; the Log House was constructed in 1868 by Johannes Erickson and his 13-year-old son Alfred.

At the Society's Museum, visitors can discover the intrigue of America's past through the unique lens of local history. They can hear the voices of an earlier time, recorded in the letters, diaries, and documents found in the library and archives; learn the many stories of the regional past through permanent and changing exhibits where each object connects the visitor with a time gone by; and place their hands on the past in the award-winning History Lab, a participatory gallery for all ages. Informative lectures and workshops, family programs, trips and tours, and an array of celebratory events combine to bring history to life.

The Society has its headquarters in the Kate Lobrano House, an 1896 shotgun cottage that was donated to the society in 1988 by the grandchildren of Katherine Maynard Lobrano. Most of the original house is used as a turn-of-the-century museum.

The Society maintains a museum and Glendower State Memorial. The Museum is housed in Harmon Hall, a three story, 28,000-square-foot brick building. It contains artifacts from prehistoric eras to the mid-20th century. Glendower is a restored Greek Revival mansion, one of the five built during the 19th century. John Milton Williams, a framer of the state's constitution, employed Amos Bennett to build the rectangular central unit in the 1840s. The 13 rooms include a formal drawing room with two fireplaces. All rooms, furnished with Empire and early Victorian style pieces, reflect the skilled local craftsmen and gracious living of the residents.

The Society maintains three historical properties, including the Beall-Dawson House, the Stonestreet Museum of 19th-century Medicine, and the Waters House History Center. Visitors can learn about the county's beginnings at the historic 1815 Beall-Dawson House, an elegant federal style townhome that features period rooms and changing exhibits. The museum tour highlights the culture and daily life of both the upper-class Beall family as well as the enslaved African Americans who labored in the house and on the adjacent property. The Stonestreet Museum offers an insider's look into the developments in medical science that occurred during the career of Dr. Edward E. Stonestreet. Built in 1852, this unique one-room Gothic Revival doctor's office features medical artifacts and implements that demonstrate the fascinating changes that occurred in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Waters House History Center is housed in oldest house in Germantown—built in three parts, the oldest dates to the mid-1790s. It offers exhibits related to local history.

The Society collects and preserve books and pamphlets, maps, manuscripts, photographs, newspapers, and periodicals pertaining to the history of Westchester County; promotes the knowledge and understanding of that history; and advocates for the preservation of the county's architectural heritage.

The new Magoffin County Pioneer Village and Museum consists of a collection of 14 authentic log buildings that have been reconstructed on Society grounds. The log cabin structures serve as living history centers with displays and demonstrations of early crafts.

The Association's Museum displays exhibits interpreting the area's history from the earliest recorded times (1600) to the present day through its collections of paintings, maps, furniture and decorative arts.
