The Ames Florida Stork House, open to visitors throughout the year, chronicles the history of three of Rockford's most prominent families, beginning in the mid-1800s.

Rice Couny Historical Society, Museum, and Alexander Faribault House [MN]

Description

The Society's Rice County Museum of History contains a collection of objects, images, and artifacts ranging from prehistory to the present day. The exhibits are variable, as the Society rotates its collection through its display space. Behind the museum, visitors may explore the Historical Village, including the Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, the 1850s Pleasant Valley School, the 1857 Volg Log Cabin, and the Harvest and Heritage Halls. The Society also maintains and operates the Alexander Faribault House, built in the Greek Revival style in 1853 by Alexander Faribault for a cost of $4,000.00. The Faribault family lived in the house for a few years, moving later to a large brick mansion on the bluffs overlooking the Straight River. The house was used as a civic center and as a private home. Today, the Faribault House displays pieces belonging to the Faribault family and other early settlers.

Split Rock Lighthouse Historic Site [MN]

Description

The Split Rock Lighthouse was constructed in 1910 in reaction to several shipwrecks resulting from a 1905 storm. Shipwrecks from a mighty 1905 November gale prompted this rugged landmark's construction. Today, the lighthouse has been restored to its 1920s appearance and, in conjunction with the visitor center and keeper's house, gives visitors a glimpse into the life at the lighthouse in the 1920s.

James J. Hill House [MN]

Description

The 1891 Gilded Age James J. Hill House served as the residence of James J. Hill (1838-1916), chief executive officer of several Great Northern Railway lines; his family; and their servants. The interpretive focuses include family life and the life of the home's domestic servants. Other topics covered include Hill's career; architecture; interior design; and period heating, power, communication, and lighting systems. Hill's original gallery now displays art exhibits.

The house offers residence tours, exhibits, 75-minute tours of the residence for students, video or slide show introductory programs for students, late 19th-century skill workshops for children, 90-minute walking tours and 45-minute bus tours of the Summit Avenue neighborhood, lectures, concerts, and dramatic performances. Minnesota Transportation Museum [MN, WI]

Description

The Minnesota Transportation Museum presents the history of human travel. The museum consists of three sites. The Jackson Street Roundhouse, once a maintenance building for steam engines, presents the railway histories of St. Paul, Minneapolis, and the greater Upper Midwest. This site also serves as the home of the museum's classic busses. The Osceola and St. Croix Valley Railway in Osceola, Wisconsin provides the chance to ride a train. The museum also operates Minneapolis' historic Minnehaha or "Princess" Depot.

Goodhue County Historical Society and History Center [MN]

The Goodhue County Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Goodhue County, Minnesota. To this end, the society operates the History Center. Collections include more than 150,000 artifacts, ranging back to prehistoric times. Permanent displays address Native American life, military history, geology, natural history, sports, leisure, costume, agriculture, archaeology, business, and immigration.
