Description

The W.W. Mayo House was home to both the Mayo and Cosgrove families, who would go on to found the Mayo Clinic and Green Giant Food Company respectively. The home was hand-built by W.W. Mayo in 1859, and today is open as a fully restored historic house museum.

Winona County Historical Society, Museums, and Bunnell House [MN]

Description

The Winona County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history of Winona County, Minnesota. The society owns and operates three structures: the Winona County History Museum, the Bunnell House, and the Arches Museum of Pioneer Life. The mid-1800s Bunnell House, which currently serves as a historic house museum, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The society offers guided interpretive tours of the Bunnell House, exhibits and events at the Winona County Historical Museum that chronicle the history of Winona County, and exhibits and events at the Arches Museum which showcase pioneer life. Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame [MN]

Description

The Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame was first opened in 1992 in order to chronicle the history of amateur baseball in history since its beginning in 1857. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to honor those who have dedicated their lives to amateur baseball progress, through playing the game as well as work in the community to keep amateur baseball alive and kicking. Members are not chosen solely by their statistics as a player, but also by their contribution to the game through volunteerism, fund raising, promotion, and general community involvement.

The Hall of Fame offers visitors a variety of exhibits and collections that showcase the history and progress of amateur baseball in Minnesota through the years. The site offers visitor information, online photographs and historical information regarding the Hall of Fame's uniform, equipment, and memorabilia collections, a listing of all Hall of Fame inductees, and an online store.

Lac qui Parle Mission [MN]

Description

The Lac qui Parle Mission was founded in 1826 on the Minnesota River. The mission only lasted 20 years before the missionaries were forced out by Dakota opposition. Luckily, the mission has stood the test of time, and today is much the same as it was during the site's brief existence as a mission. The location is notable for creating the Dakota alphabet and for the translation of the Bible into the Dakota's language.

Mill City Museum [MN]

Description

Mills City Museum chronicles the flour milling industry that fueled the growth of Minneapolis, and gave it the nickname that would be recognized around the nation as "Mill City." The museum is built within the ruins of a National Historic Landmark, the Washburn A Mill. "The story of flour milling — and its impact on Minneapolis, the nation and the world — comes to life through the eight-story Flour Tower and other hands-on exhibits."

Northfield Historical Society and Middle School Museum [MN]

Description

The Society operates the Northfield School Museum, dedicated to preserving the history of the old Northfield Middle School building. This building opened its doors in 1911 as the Northfield Central High School. With the construction of the new middle school the last classes were held in the old school in 2004.

The society offers research library access and occasional educational and recreational events; the museum offers exhibits.

Carver County Historical Society and Museum

Description

Established in 1940, the Society is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Carver County. Located across from Bayview Elementary School in Waconia, the Society's museum was expanded in 1998 to better serve the public. The museum houses five local history exhibits, a veterans' exhibit, and a local history and genealogy library.

The Carver County Historical Society offers a one room schoolhouse program, eco-history programs, and specific programs for each grade, such as ‘Marching Barefoot’, for the 6th grade Civil War program, and ‘Down on the Farm’, for the 2nd grade farm and pioneer life and animal program. They also offer day and summer camps, and quarterly family day trips.

Lake County Historical Society and Historic Sites [MN]

Description

Organized in 1925, the mission of the Lake County Historical Society is to preserve the history of Lake County, MN, through the preservation, study and interpretation of artifacts, documents, photographs, and historic sites. The Society also maintains several historic sites. The Two Harbors Light Station constructed in 1892 is the oldest operating light station in Minnesota and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The lighthouse museum explores the development of Agate Bay. The 3M Museum includes the original office and headquarters of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M). It was here, in 1902, that five businessmen embarked on a mining venture which laid the foundation for a successful global corporation. Exhibits include Attorney John Dwan's recreated office; a history of the company including photos, artifacts, and documents; a "lab" area representing research and development, product diversification, and growth; and a "hands on" interactive program of technology applications. The Depot Museum is in the 1907 headquarters of the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad, and highlights the early pioneering history of Lake County. Exhibits range from McDougal archaeological dig artifacts and a Paleo-Indian display to the first shipment of iron ore from Minnesota.

The Two Harbors Light Station offers exhibits and tours; the 3M Museum offers exhibits; and the Depot Museum offers short films and exhibits.
