Folsom Historical Society and Museum [CA]

Description

The Society's Museum focuses on exhibits exploring Folsom's native people; the discovery of gold and the formation of mining camps; ethnic groups who contributed to this area; the formation of the town and the growth and establishment of the railroad, prison, and powerhouse; and later efforts at gold mining. The Museum's Pioneer Living History Center allows visitors a look at Folsom's past through vehicles; machines; equipment; and replicas of a miner's shack, blacksmith shop, carriage shed, and more.

The society offers educational and recreational events; the museum offers exhibits, tours, and educational programs.

Huerfano County Historical Society and Museums [CO]

Description

The Huerfano County Historical Society is located in La Veta, CO, the center of the Spanish Peaks area of the Colorado Rockies. The society owns and operates two museums, the Walsenburg Mining Museum, which focuses on the history of mining in the Colorado Rockies, and the Francisco Fort Museum, which is a living history museum chronicling the history of early settlers and explorers in the Huerfano County region.

"Offered in Summer 2008, the workshop will focus on the history and activities that took place on the Vermilion and the Mesabi Iron Ranges. Participants will be provided with resources and new content knowledge for introducing the history of Minnesota's Iron Range region, its contributions, and its people into their current American history curriculum. In order to make this easier, the workshops will be based on national history standards and the national social studies standards and will be organized around three central themes that align with those standards. These three themes are: 1) Natural History of the Landmark: Geography and Geology; 2) The Mines and their Contributions to American History; 3) and the People and the Mines (indigenous peoples, ethnicity, and immigration)."

Elkhorn State Park [MT]

Description

During its heyday in the 1880s, the mining town of Elkhorn swelled to a population of 2,500. The boom ended in 1890 with the drop in silver prices and residents moved to other areas. They left behind two impressive structures, Fraternity Hall and Gillian Hall, which have been preserved as outstanding examples of frontier architecture.

The site is open to the public.

Columbia CA Chamber of Commerce [CA]

Description

The Columbia CA Chamber of Commerce is dedicated towards preserving and aiding in the everyday operation of the Columbia State Historic Park, which is located in Columbia, California. Columbia was one of the first gold rush towns in California, and was founded in 1850 along a particularly large vein of gold, and so was very successful. Unlike many other gold rush towns, Columbia was never truly abandoned, and was incorporated into the California State Park system in 1945.

The site offers a history of Columbia, a listing of merchants and lodging in and around Columbia, and an events calendar.
