"Undertaken from the vantage point of FDR’s beloved Hyde Park this week-long NEH Workshop will offer teachers a unique perspective on Roosevelt’s response to the Great Depression and World War II, with a special emphasis on how FDR’s relationship to his home community influenced his thinking about national policy and America’s role in the world."

This seminar will explore competing notions of how the U.S. government should be organized, looking at ways in which presidents, judicial decisions, business practices, and other forces have shaped and changed the form of government throughout history.

This workshop will explore the history of Mount Vernon, the development of the Constitution, and the life of George Washington, looking particularly at how Mount Vernon served as a center for discussion of the issues and ideas that would lead to creation of the Constitution. Lectures, discussions, Powerpoint presentations, readings, tours of Mount Vernon and other sites, pedagogical sessions, and curriculum development will be included in the workshop.
