Camden-Rockport Historical Society and Museum [ME]

Description

The Camden-Rockport Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of the Camden-Rockport area, Maine. To this end, the society operates the 1770 Cape Cod-style Conway House. The house is furnished in the style of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Other structures on site include an 18th-century barn, a blacksmith shop, an 1820 maple sugar house, an education center, and the Cramer Museum. Museum collections are particularly strong in historic costume and glass. Other artifacts include works of fine art, firearms, and musical instruments.

The society offers a day camp. The museum offers exhibits and a reference library. The Conway House offers period rooms.

Hubbard County Historical Museum [MN]

Description

The Hubbard County Historical Museum presents the history of Hubbard County, Minnesota. Permanent exhibits include Native American life, farming, logging, quilts, and rooms depicting a pioneer cabin and a one-room schoolhouse. Collection strengths include Civil War artifacts and textiles.

Suquamish Museum [WA]

Description

The Suquamish Museum presents the history and culture of the Puget Sound Salish Tribes—with particular emphasis granted the Suquamish Tribe. Collections include artifacts of daily life, more than 9,000 photographs and negatives, canoes, carvings, archival documents, and 150 oral histories.

The museum offers exhibits and guided tours. 48 hours notice is required for all guided tours.

Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium [VT]

Description

The Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium presents conservation stewardship, natural history, and the relationship between humanity and our ecosystems. The environmental focus is on the Great Northern Forest. The museum is housed in a Victorian structure, and possesses the only public planetarium in Vermont. Over 400 species of plant can be viewed on site; and the museum collections consist of more than 175,000 specimens, artifacts, and archival documents.

The museum offers 50-minute planetarium presentations, exhibits, curriculum-based walking tours and educational programs for students, a student curator summer program, and archival access. Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more wishing to view the planetarium program. Archival access is by appointment only. The website offers monthly astronomical information; curriculum resource guides on Abenaki life, the Great Northern Forest, and regional history; and scavenger hunts for use at the museum.

Northwest Seaport [WA]

Description

The Northwest Seaport is a maritime heritage center in Washington state. The seaport maintains several historic vessels, including the 1889 tugboat Arthur Foss, which was used in 1898 to transport miners to Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush.

The center offers monthly chantey sings, preschool story times, monthly tugboat engineering workshops for participants 14 years of age or older, and self-guided and 45-minute group tours of the Arthur Foss. Group tours support no more than 12 participants. Please call ahead to arrange group tours and to ensure that the tugboat is open to the public on the day you plan to visit.

Bainbridge Island Historical Society and Museum [WA]

Description

The Bainbridge Island Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the material and cultural history of Bainbridge Island, Washington. To this end, the society operates a museum of local history, located within a 1908 one-room schoolhouse. A MUSE award was given to the museum for its creative use of technology within a small-scale museum. Collections include more than 3,500 artifacts.

The society offers multi-media and traditional exhibits.

El Cajon Historical Society and the Knox House Museum [CA]

Description

The El Cajon Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of El Cajon Valley, California—with a particular emphasis on archival documents. To this end, the society operates the Knox House Museum. The museum contains the personal artifacts of the settlers who came to the El Cajon area between 1895 and 1912. The museum structure itself was built in 1876.

Ybor City Museum State Park [FL]

Description

Don Vicente Martinez Ybor came to the frontier near Tampa and built a city that became the "Cigar Capital of the World." From the opening of the first cigar factory in 1886 until the 1930s, Ybor City flourished. This urban park is dedicated to the preservation of Ybor City's cultural heritage. The museum, housed in the historic Ferlita Bakery, traces the rich cultural history of Ybor City and the cigar-making industry. The museum has self-guided exhibits, with written and audio information, and a video presentation.

The park offers a short film, exhibits, tours, and demonstrations.
