Poland Spring Preservation Society and Maine State Building [ME]

Description

The Poland Spring Preservation Society was formed to preserve the Maine State Building and the All Souls Chapel. The Maine State Building was created in 1893 for the Chicago World's Fair. At the fair, it displayed exhibits, portraits of famous Maine residents, taxidermy, and a library. At this point in time, the building houses a portion of its original contents, as well as exhibits of local artwork. The Catholic and Protestant chapel was completed in 1912.

The society offers exhibits, an art gallery, and summer concerts.

California Oil Museum [CA]

Description

The California Oil Museum recounts the boom in black gold in the city of Santa Paula during the late 19th century. The museum contains exhibits that display oil rigging tools, oil advertisements, wildcatter memorabilia, and other relevant artifacts.

School tours are available for K-12 with the option of hands-on educational programs.

Howell Historical Society and Museums [NJ]

Description

The Howell Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Howell Township, New Jersey. To this end, the society operates the Old Ardena Schoolhouse and MacKenzie Museum. The museum and accompanying research library are located within a circa 1807-1855 structure. The schoolhouse dates to circa 1855.

The society offers exhibits, research library access, activities, and tours of the Old Ardena Schoolhouse. The schoolhouse is open to the public the last Sunday of each month.

Tobacco Farm Life Museum [NC]

Description

The Tobacco Farm Life Museum provides an authentic and interesting view into the lives of turn of the century tobacco farmers in eastern North Carolina. The site focuses on daily life and farming techniques of the early 20th century.

Several types of educational tours appropriate for all grade levels are offered, including a candle-making tour, a butter-churning tour, etc. Teacher resources for pre- and post-visit are also offered to accompany your visit.

Marble Valley Historical Society and Museums [GA]

Description

The Marble Valley Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Pickens County, Georgia. To this end, the society operates two historical structures, the Old Pickens County Jail and the Kirby-Quinton Mountain Heritage Cabin. The jail, used between 1906 and 1982, now holds exhibits on county history and law enforcement. The cabin was built in 1975 using logs from an older structure. The interior is styled in antique furnishings and decorative arts.

The society offers exhibits, period rooms, and tours. Tours of the jail and cabin are available by appointment.

Hood River County Historical Museum [OR]

Description

Hood River County Historical Museum presents the socio-cultural history of Hood River County, Oregon. Topics addressed within permanent exhibits include the daily lives of pioneer, Native American, and area ethnic groups, as well as Japanese Internment after Pearl Harbor.

The museum offers exhibits, guided tours, self-guided tours, activity tours, research assistance, a traveling trunk on the local fruit industry, and several school tour options. All guided tours are customized to group needs. Payment is required for research assistance.

Nethercutt Collection and Museum [CA]

Description

The Nethercutt Collection consists of more than 200 vintage automobiles, as well as mechanical musical instruments, hood ornaments, antique furniture, and musical pocket watches. Automobile makers represented include McFarlan, De Dion Bouton, Maybach, Deusenberg, and Rolls-Royce. At any given time, 30 automobiles are on display.

The collection offers 2-hour guided tours. Reservations are required. Jeans, shorts, and children under 12 are not permitted.

Hurley Heritage Society [NY]

Description

The Hurley Heritage Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Hurley, New York. To this end, the society operates a museum of local history, located within the 1790 Col. Jonathan Elmendorf House. Main Street is a Historic Landmark District, containing six of Hurley's stone houses built between the late 1600s and 1818; and is used during guided tours to discuss local Dutch heritage.

The society offers exhibits, monthly guided walking tours of Main Street, guided group tours of individual stone houses, and a self-guided driving tour of the area. Reservations are required for stone house tours.

Museum of Work and Culture [RI]

Description

"This interactive museum presents story of immigrants who came to find a better life in the mill towns along the Blackstone River. School tours are available and include a guided tour of the museum, living history presentations, and a Blackstone River cruise.

Georgetown Historical Society and Nutter D. Marvel Museum [DE]

Description

The Georgetown Historical Society operates the Nutter D. Marvel museum of local history. Housed within two barns, a one-room schoolhouse, historic church, two railroad freight buildings, and a blacksmith shop, the museum presents a collection of carriages. Additional items in the collection include photographs; books; Georgetown, DE memorabilia; and newspaper clippings.
